Mike. When I worked for a large PLC the computers went down and all hell broke loose. My boss called in the computer company and they quoted £3000 to fix it. The price was agreed and in came the guy. He pressed no more than 10 keystrokes and everything came back on. My boss went bananas at this guy ranting and raving over the price and how could he justify the charges, it was daylight robbery etc. The guy stood there and said . I justify my price because your computers are working and I know which keys to press. Thank you for the business and please call me again.

It doesn't solve your predicament but it reminded me of my boss who still I am told rants and raves!!!

To me that's like holding someone to ransom.

No way of building a business. Sounds like something out of Rough Traders.

Did a commercial today, price was £525.. but gave a good discount as I didn't think it would take that long. So they accepted on £400.. took 3.5 hours, easy work. Phoned the the lady who organised it, to tell her I had finished.
Her first words were, "Wow that was quick", so I was expecting some remarks about price and time.
She walked in and  saw the first long corridor and immediately told me that they had been cleaned before but had never come up anywhere near as good. She was thrilled and paid in cash on the spot.
I asked her who had cleaned for them before. She mentioned a local cleaner, who I knew. I said to her that he is really cheap, she agreed, but added, he may be cheaper but it's worth paying the extra to have it done properly.

If a customer wants a fixed price and you are able to give one what happens if you are there all week for the same money?

Perhaps it's just something they say either 'it's took you a long time' or 'that didn't take long'

I don't take any notice personally.

No issue here.
I tell them their paying for the job, my experience, and my several grand's worth of equipment.
Not how long it takes to do it.
I can do it fast BECAUSE I have experience and several grand's worth of equipment.
Like most of you guys im sure.

Rich  ;D

I tend to get this complaint from pubs more than anywhere else and my standard response is - "If I drink pints really fast will you give me a discount?" That normally shuts them up! :D

When I used to work with my dad. On the bottom of the paperwork I put a line which I pointed out to them before I started work  - "The work today will take approx 2.5 hours, which equates to five man hours work".

At least the custy knew upfront, and I have done the maths for them so save them the effort!
