Nothing new to report.

I've had 3 calls from police officers (all different) this week telling me they are involved and they'll follow it up and report back to me.  Latest was yesterday morning.  Still nothing done so far as I can tell. The last one asked me if I knew his name or contact details, I gave these on the first day I reported it, and again when I gave my statement, so not exactly reassuring!  I'll give them a call on Monday and make a complaint if there's no progress

This one often works in showing you are serious about wanting it sorted.

"I'm sorry but I feel you aren't taking this seriously; I feel distressed at what has happened, would you tell me what your next step is and when that is likely to be?"

If the answer is unsatisfactory then very politely say: "I'm not happy with this - please let me know the name and rank of your divisional commander (usually a Superintendent or Chief Superintendent) and also where I can write to him or her about this please?"

Using that shows you know a bit about the structure of the force and that you are intending to contact someone high enough up the chain of command that they will not wish to displease.

Then if they haven't got back to you quickly send the letter. (After asking the barrack room lawyers and frustrated journalists on CIU how best to compose it of course!  ;D)
It's a game of three halves!

i would to say the report is a log of evidence for if something did actually happen rather than anything else

Just got back from the police station.

They have had the owner in who made the threat and he admitted to acting aggressively and threatening, tho did not admit to making a death threat.

apparently the owner is unhappy with what is happening in the area with the number of WCs operating here nowadays and was very frustrated. he also said that he was not unhappy with us delivering leaflets, but with the leafleters knocking on his customer's doors.  of course that hasn't happened as i employ leafleters not canvassers (currently) and leafleters just dont take it upon themselves to start door knocking!

the police are nowadays apparently using 'restorative justice' and this means that he has to write a letter of apology to me, and admit what has happened.  i was given the letter today by the police.

the incident is kept on file now and is closed, but will be reopened if any further incidents occur, and what has happened will then be reopened.

if anything does happen in the future, this character has now had his chance at 'restorative justice' and will be charged.

i am happy with this outcome as it puts an end to any more time wasting activity from me, but also gives him the message that i will involve the police any time he acts like this towards myself or my staff again.

thanks for all your support  :)  i genuinely appreciate it, and was, if i am being honest, surprised and humbled by  :)

I think it's quite easy these days for people to make threats in the heat of the moment when they are frustrated and angry. But that does not excuse his actions and that behaviour needed to be challenged.

I think you got the approach spot on because it is also all to easy for retaliation to occur which then escalates the issue - sometimes to the point where lives can be ruined.  By bringing the police in at the start you have made it clear that you will not accept his bullying and threatening behaviour; it has also allowed the police to view the threats from one side only rather than a 'he said, I said' standpoint.

He has been given a clear warning by you and the police that his actions are unacceptable and will not be tolerated and only a fool of epic proportions would take any further action - thus leaving you and your leaflet poster able to continue to seek work free from threats of violence.

I think this is a lesson for everyone on how a situation should be handled.

Couldn't be more pleased for you  ;)

Cheers, Tom

Great result mate. There's a knuckle dragging mong about to rock up on the Isle of White soon. He used to work over here, but is moving there soon. I had trouble with the guy years ago, so I expect he'll kick off when he gets there. Anyone on I.O.W. enjoy the trip  ;D ;D Does gardening too, so should be enough guys to upset.

Whether or not the police took it seriously, my initial statement that "there is more crime in Merseyside than Cornwall" is still true.

Good result btw Richard, would love to see his written apology though I guess you won't be willing to upload it!  ;D

Yeah that is just tuff!! its getting like that everywhere now nothing can be done so he is better of getting used to it than crying over it.

I liked the bit about him being upset at people knocking on the doors of his customers.  The only way they could avoid that is for him to supply them with a list!!!
