I bet you £1 that he has at least 5 days off work in the next 4 weeks.

A whole £1?
You must be really confident.  ;D

I am going down the franchise route but was hoping to have a big chunk of the new work upfront rather than a mad scramble to pick up a couple of hundred customers in 3 months. The employee also gives me the extra capacity to keep picking up customers at a high rate all year round. With the franchisee I find they want work in spurts. When they have settled in after about 6 months they want about 60 more, then another 50 then 50 more at the year mark. I am up to my tits all the time so need help to take on a good number all year round.

Out of interest, how are you finding the franchise route?
Dave.

It's going really well. First guy is full and giving me no problems. You don't make as much as you would make off an employee but then again you don't have to worry if he falls out his window tanked up one Friday evening.

*****update********
Guy was off for the full week, came back on the monday last week. Wanted to finish early on the tuesday and day off for moving on the wednesday. Worked ok other than that. Collected him this morning at 8.15, he was back home by 9.20 with 'bad tummy'.

So all in all in 4 1/2 weeks hes had one full week off, one day to move, one wanted to finish early and one more sick today.

Called it.

10 things that make a good worker:

1 Comes into work on time every day.
2 Doesn't take days off.
3 Doesn't get 'ill'.
4 Doesn't get mondayitis
5 Comes into work everyday.
6 Doesn't take days off
7 Is not a skiver
8 Understands that you need him in EVERY DAY
9 Never misses a day.
10 Comes into work EVERY DAY.

Any issue you have with an employee (attitude, speed of work,  customer relations etc) can be solved provided they come into work EVERY DAY.

It's window cleaning, you can teach any one to do it, provided they come into work EVERY DAY.

Called it X2!

There is no secret. If I had a formula for it I would have retired by now. I have just employed someone (starts on Monday) who had already been in my employment on 3 previous occasions. He is not perfect but he is a capable cleaner and will be good cover for the next few months.

Everybody tells you not to employ friends or family. I have employed pretty much all my friends at some point. They are by a long way my best workers and as long as you are straight up about everything there are rarely any problems that can't be sorted.

One thing that I do tell them on day one is that if they have any days off in their trial period (3 months) they will get sacked. I don't necessarily sack them, that is judged on merit but that is what I tell them.

We have 3 main rules which are drummed into new employees:

1. Don't steal from us
2. Don't lie to us

You can guess rule 3  ;D

i have employed many window cleaners (more than a 100) over the last 30 years and if they are taking days off in the first month they are never going to be any good for you, learn from my mistakes....

Just out of interest; when were you last off 'ill'?

Personally The last time I was too ill to work was February 2011. I was in hospital getting an operation on my 'window cleaners knee'.
