SLX base section has come open
« on: July 03, 2013, 09:33:38 pm »
Hi, I've read many occasions where an SLX has started spinning where the clamps are but has anyone repaired an SLX where the base section has come undone as shown in the photo below.

Any ideas how to go about fixing this? Had it for three or four years now so it's had a good life.....

You will need to re-glue the base clamp back on with a suitable two-pack epoxy such as Araldite Rapid etc.

To do this follow the guidance in this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PysvFrQYUUc

Of course as this pole is 3 or 4 years old it may be an ideal time to upgrade to the new smart clamps as one clamp is already off the pole. This will completely renew the action of the pole with the new clamps automatically adjust to cope with any wear on the pole. The smart clamp upgrade kits can be found here - http://www.gardinerpolesystems.co.uk/acatalog/Gardiner-Smart-Clamp-DIY-Upgrade-Kits-ClampII_SET.html

Full fittings instructions for the smart clamps can be found on this video - http://youtu.be/MUW1WpzfpyE
The benefits of the new smart clamps can be seen on this video - http://youtu.be/RN2zjFqhOSw

I thought someone might mention that after i posted it. Just got off a really messy fascia and gutter job.

I remembered to line up all my clamps before posting, I knew that would cause a kerfuffle. Forgot about a nice clean brush.

Thanks Alex, I'll look into it. Although if i remember correctly you need to hacksaw bits off to attach the new clamps and at the risk of losing a "man card" that freaks me out a little.

As a quick fix, you can just wrap some electricians tape around the clamp and the pole.  I've a pole that's been used this way for about six months now without any problems.

I may get around to glueing it someday.

Those clamps look massive , Just shows how things have advanced .

I would go for new smart clamps makes a world of difference to daily use of pole and mine is only 2-3 months old . Mike

You don't have to hacksaw anything.
Just prepare the surfaces by removing old glue with sandpaper, clean and then apply glue and clamp.
It's a 5 to 10 minute job.

BUY THE NEW GARDINER CLAMPS!it will be like  a new pole mate.itll take you an hour to do.the clamps come off easily with a hacksaw and a screwdriver.

there is a video on the gardiner website about how to go about changing clamps.re glueing etc.

i upgraded all my clamps on my 3 poles.took me 3 hours altogether.then i left them overnight to dry.

they now grip firmly and tightly no matter where i clamp the sections.previously all 3 poles were spinning on the top 3 sections.magic! ;D ;D ;D ;D
price higher/work harder!

Might get a set of those clamps too, the older ones are not doing much for me. Nearly prefer the old brodex clamp, just the clamp not a comparison pole wise!!

After watching Alex on the videos, I think i can manage the new clamps.  ::)roll

Might upgrade to the new quick-loq too, but I'm not sure what I need, i don't have a gooseneck, but I'm constantly changing brushes, so would i be right in thinking this is the kit i'd need to buy?

This is the correct upgrade kit to order if currently using an older adjustable plastic gooseneck.
