Anyone on Dialysis ?
«
on:
June 28, 2013, 03:46:06 pm »
I have just found out that the connection that i need in my stomach to go on dialysis will make me susceptible to getting hernias if I do heavy lifting like getting the machine in and out of the van. Was wondering if anyone out there does the same or what would be a alternative service to offer without the lifting. If not looks like im gonna be selling some gear.!!

I use portys in a Fiat Scudo Van.
I use a 5 ft ramp that I bought from Machine Mart. There is no way I could, or would want to lift it in and out, total madness!
Its still heavy to push up, and I speak as someone who had a back operation 5 years ago, but far better than lifting!
Hope it helps.

Hi Guys
The other idea is to van mount the machine with or if you can afford it, go for a TM, it really is a lot easier than using a porty.
Cheers

Could you not fix a 12v winch to the inside of the van, to pull the machine up the ramp?

that's a really sensible answer and would cost little money, when I had my Bane clean i used a 12 V winch to get back in and out when needed, and believe me it was a lot heavier than most portables, so yes it would work fine.

When I had my other van last year, I used to use a winch as my back was bad. It worked, but took about 3 minutes intense turning to get the Alltec Advance up (Its very heavy!). It was bloody hard work, so it was alot quicker just giving it a good push up the ramp.

a winch could work for getting in the van !!! something to think about not sure how bad im gonna be apparently i have 4 litres of fluid in my stomach all day I will have to research a little more.
I think that the wanding and agitating may be to much.was hoping to chat to someone who does similar.

Maybe a Rotovac 360i would help

I would have thought you are going to have to insist on either they remove all furniture or go around it. I don't care what fancy gadget you buy or how many sliders you have its a sure way to do yourself a mischief and your guts start piling out.
I wonder if you could have a meeting with an occupational therapist you can be referred to? Maybe you can modify a truss, do they still use them? Maybe they think strengthening certain muscles will give you more protection?

David, Wynne's advice is very sensible. As a former nurse with many years of cleaning and carpet cleaning experience also. I would recommend getting a referral to see an occupational therapist and possibly also a physiotherapist, before you damage yourself. Speak to your GP and the Dialysis nurses regarding your work and the concerns you have around the physical strains and stresses. I'm sure they will give you best advice regarding what you can and cannot safely do.
Good luck with the treatment. Phil

David, where is the connection?
If it is around the belly button, you may get away with a weightlifter's belt.
Bear in mind you will have a weakness in the area around the connection that may be susceptible to strains elsewhere. As above talk to a medical professional first.

Take on an assistant to help and let them do the lifting etc. train them up and let them do the manual stuff while you concentrate on marketing and developing the business.
