Rippler that wont flatten
« on: June 13, 2013, 03:02:48 pm »
Cleaned a carpet 2 days ago which rippled after I left. The lady says it still hasnt flattened today. I'm going back there tomorrow.
Been carpet cleaning 15 years and on the odd occasions a carpet has rippled it has always always righted itself and returned to its original state ie flat.
Anyone come across this before? And no I didnt over wet  it. I cleaned it the same way I've always done but this one doesnt look like its going to flatten.

Thanks
Chris

I've seen these take over a week to settle down especially in humid conditions which we have now.

Have seen them where the rippling is permanent due to pushing heavy furniture about whilst the carpet is wet. In this case a fitter needs to re-stretch and trim.

Vast majority will self correct, unfortunately I've had to refit a couple and get a fitter in on one.its a pain but these things happen.

As John mentioned, I had one several years ago where because the furniture was pushed over, the carpet rippled.
It was due to no gripper rods being fitted in one area and had pulled away from the wall.

The lady got the firm back that fitted the carpet to correct it.

I also had one in a pub recently which was synthetic and rippled a lot. It was ok after several days.

Def give it more than 2 days. Remember it's not the carpet that needs to dry but the primary backing.  Couple of things. Was it fitted correctly, normally when this happens the tension is not right in carpet, or underlay is diminishing.you may want to get a signature stating that due to conditions beyond your control you cannot be held liable.

Worst case fitter and the stretch and you will have a client for years.

Whey hey !!!!!!!!!!  Lady called me today to say its flattened. So another lesson learnt. Ripplers can take a few of days to flatten. Even though in the past they've always flattened within the next day. Thanks for the replies chaps.

Several years ago a good quality one I did took a week to flatten.
Not through cleaning, through over applying solvent based protector.

Give it a week. It's better getting bigger than getting smaller - if it comes to it, bring in your local fitter - he can stretch & trim easier than he he stretch & stretch.

Good to have an ongoing relationship with a team of fitters - often you will find you dont have to pay as they may well owe you one after you have cleaned marks they have left when fitting new carpet! The firm I have been friendly with has just sold up and the owners retired so I had to find new people - always nice to have that assurance.
When I first started I had a customer that played merry hell about a ripple which would not go away - he had to have moved his furniture around with big wooden feet on it and managed to get it to ripple - the carpet fitters I called in told me he was definitely aiming for getting a new carpet in that room out of me but they told him it was good as new and the cause - you can often tell straight away when you prespray if a carpet is going to ripple but 99 times out of 100 they will settle down after cleaning - you should be able to re-assure the customer before you leave that it will flatten - it comes with experience and confidence to smooth things out in advance!
