bad day solution hose burst
« on: June 05, 2013, 09:15:10 pm »
I had a solution hose burst today in spectacular fashion. I had black crap everywhere and worst of all the customer was right behind me when it happened ( one of the ones who watches you like a hawk).  Tbh it pretty shook me up and altho I shoved it down the tm hose in well under a min the damage was done and I burnt my hands trying to do it.. Me and the customer was soaked with red hot water and im lucky he was ok. The customers wife on the other hand was stessing like mad  The black s**t that sprayed the walls and wall paper was awful to get off and a job that should have been 1.5 hours toom 4 with me having to wash walls down. I was lucky not to have a claim on my hands.
The hose is under 18 months old and the machine was running 300psi.
Is there anyway of preventing it from making such a mess, like possibly a sleeve over the first 10 feet or so.
Also can I have some recommendations for some new hose.
You have an awful stressful day like today and it makez you question your job sometimez.

Many thanks

Luc

Luc,
You've been really unlucky. I've been running tm's for 30 years and can't remember the last time one burst inside a job, so don't get too paranoid, it's a rare occurrence.

I have made my last section of hose internal, Woodbridge and Hydramaster do a cuff that you can put the hose through OK it loses some suction but none noticable to me and set up is faster.

Assuming the burst line was at the joint of line to connector, it normaly is because of the very fact this is the weakest with all the bending , I have found it good practice to have terry towel hung over the part of the pipe.

This does give you the chance to get to the machine before too much damadge is done.

If you've got black death in your solution hose, that suggests that it is either very old or that it has deteriorated internally which shouldn't happen if the line is only 18 months old. This only usually happens in old lines that haven't been used for a while. It also means that you were cleaning the carpet with black water prior to the burst.

Hi Luc

Bad news, I had one go a few weeks ago, bought some new hose straight away but was a bit paranoid for a few days.

My hose that went was also about 18 months and running at 300 but this is the first time a hose this new has gone.

How near the end did it burst?

Just to clear up any confusion the black is carbon from the rubber and will only happen when the pipe bursts.

Cheers

Doug

I've seen it on a line that hasn't burst but hadn't been used for a while and remained in service thereafter but burst some time later, so it is more likely that the black is a sign the gradual deterioration of the walls of the line eventually allowing the hot solution to find the weakest point.

You could use  Parker Parflex 1035A its plastic hose, has some downside temp 200f max and suffers from memory kink. If it burst just clean water not contaminated. Heat shrink for about 4ft from the end then if burst goes to floor.

i still have my original solution pipes from new 5 years ago. okay so they have all had new ends numerous times (triggers broom springs to mind) but still work well, only had 2 bursts that worried me, one in a commercial, i just flooded a carpet, that got sorted and the second popped on the way down a set of stairs, some went on the wall paper but wiped off relatively easy. not sure what i'd do if it happened in front of a customer, might be time to purchase some new just in case i think.
