How do the experienced guys deal with this ?
« on: May 17, 2013, 07:59:20 pm »
Happened this week

Have a new client house worth £4m. Lovely guy and loaded.

Recommended by a neighbour,so looking long term when I quoted. Quote was £1200 as worked on £300 a day which client was happy with and he knew it would take 4 days. Jet washing, gutters etc.

While I am working, he asked me to do some extra work, " we can add to the bill he asks ? No problem I reply.

Go out my way to give 110% and client is really happy. The extra work takes nearly a day.

End of the job

client says what do I owe you ?

I reply i would prefer you to pay me what you think is fair, Bearing in mind he knows the cost we agreed and the time it should take

He writes me a cheque for £1260 !!  So £60 for all the extra work !

How would you have dealt with this and how do I avoid be taken for a ride in the future

I think you have demonstrated the reason why he is loaded. In future just invoice him what you think is fair.

Simon.

why did you not just tell him what he owed you instead of  the pay me what you think?? doesn't matter if the house is worth 4 million or £40 best to always agree a price before the work starts helps keep things simple and straight and you both know where you stand then. On the up side you have someone who will use you again so you'll probably make more of him in the future.

Was hoping he would appreciate what i had done and pay accordingly

Couldnt agree price on extras as he kept adding them as we went along. If he had given me a list initially, I would have agreed a figure but he just kept adding them

Extras should always be priced and agreed before doing them to save these situations occurring
Thanks,

Tbh I understand your reason for asking him the question 'pay me what you think is fair' as big job, repeat custom. Usually I just keep a mental note of time taken for any extra jobs undertaken and then give the price on top when all completed.

Good for him. ;)

He probably thought all his birthdays had come at once when you gave him the opportunity to pay what ever he chose to. I'd have paid you £1210. ;D

At £1200 he can also have his pick of hard working, conscientious, professional cleaners!! ::)roll He was doing YOU the favour in the first place mate.

typical newbie kind of error. We are all guilty of underpricing jobs. Just learn from your mistake and move on.
