Easy joint is a very poor product, I would stay away.
No pointing is going to be pressure proof but a good pointing will resist it well but only to a certain extent.
Hope this helps

Yes

I went onto a job a while back and it had been brushed into the gaps (this was a bit of a big gaff) - i'll come back to this!

I bought some for our patio and it does work well but the gaps need to be a bit wider than normal.

The big gaff - We hadn't seen the product before and I was not part of the preparation, I never saw the packaging or instructions for use.

We pressure washed but shortly into the works I noticed that it was getting rid of the graining on the surface but wasn't touching the brush marks and any other marks, carried on for a while.

Spoke to the home owner and I asked whether the drive had been sealed, was told no, I told them of the problem and they said carry on.

Mid morning we weren't getting underneath to the dust & brush marks so I said that there must have been a sealer down and I ought to stop because it wasn't satisfactory. Told to continue!

Lunchtime - the homeowner tells me that there is a sealer in the product, when it is brushed in this sealer sits on the top of the base and has to be worn away by UV, the sun smiling at it for four months.

Absolute nightmare, we finished off at six and I had a big argument & debate about being paid & how it was left, I even offered to go back once the UV had done its stuff but I was asked to finish.

Had to take a multi-millionaire to court in the end - I got paid!!

This was a recommendation from Roger and I was annoyed that it had gone so badly - but I feel it was down to information provided and I had done everything I could to get the job right.

The one I worked on could withstand 50 tonne of pressure!!!! and is not your run of the mill from B & Q, mine is from B & Q, depending on the application and where you buy it from check that it doesn't do a seal job on you!!!

I would be very interested to know what that exact product was rob.
We are a buidling firm by trade and have had a fair few jobs raking out patios and brickwork that had been victims of DIY premixed pointing products.

I did do a bit of research on the product at the time and I remember being very impressed.

As I said - this was not your standard off the shelf stuff. We were hitting it with the H & M and a Thor and none of it came up.

Roger may be able to speak to Tony (managed the works) and find out but as it ended up being acrimonious I don't think I could go and ask, even if I could get past the electric gates!!!

Nothing wrong with good old fashioned mortar. I pointed a patio today and I guarantee it aint going anywhere. Even Rob and his mighty hot and spicy wont touch it. Dont waste money on premix products.

At the time of writing (July 2011) the only polymeric jointing products I would consider using on any project in which I was involved are those from GftK and Romex. As this is a rapidly developing market, that list may (hopefully) grow, but at the moment, there is more crap than good stuff out there.
The pre-mixed polymeric products are convenient and reduce preparation time, but some brands feature packaging that is prone to being accidentally punctured, exposing the contents to moisture and consequently hardening or perishing. All packs should be checked for integrity before opening: most suppliers are loath to accept returned opened packs that are alleged to have been compromised/punctured. The better quality products tend to come in sealed buckets or pails.

Before placing the mortar onto the surface, the installation instructions should be consulted, as there may be guidance or advice specific to that particular product.

Off the tinterweb.

You don't have the correct letters for coke (We wont try anything too difficult if you struggle with 4 letter words) ....prefix  ret . rearrange dar for the suffix.

GFTK is what brand is used in that video and they are very well known for the mortars in commercial hard landscaping mortars

we have used styrene modified slurry mixed for in similar situations where we have edged car parks or installed footpaths in granite cobbles but i have never used epoxy based systems.

i was quite impressed by the ease of the clear-up after the intial slurry had gone down. ive never come across a wet product that simply brushed off that well leaving zero residue. that alone would be worth a big premium on labour/cost saved

My experience has shown me that the base it is going onto needs to be cleaned properly, removal of all dust, brush marks, mortar or cement splashes as they are impossible to get off immediately afterwards.

Glad I could assist

a quick search has revealed for the GFTK product used in the youtube video would cost you around £100 for a 25kg tub of mortar/grout and this would cover around 3 square meters of 100mm sett stones.
i was expecting a lot worse to be honest. would quickly get pricey but you very rarely find entire drives in sett stones. that would make pavers/flags more like 10 square meter coverage on a 25kg bag and much more doable (is that a real word?)

a bit more that a standard sand cement mix but its going to last a lot longer and be a better job

That was indeed only a very small part of a substantial driveway area, I knew it was expensive gear but it did exactly what it said on the tin.

If you do stock it make sure you let people know about the sealer properties.

Money was definitely not a problem for this works. I was just really disappointed that we never had the full picture or I would definitely not have taken the works on until the sealer layer had broken down.

As per the youtube clip the gaps are quite wide!

I have used gtfk many times, 800, 850 and even the single polymeric 840+, they are great products, but pricey, I now use one that has been created as a rival, again a 2 pack epoxy, but less than half the price of gtfk and it even goes off quicker in colder conditions, gtfk can take days to set in sub 5 degree temps.....
Here is a video I did of one the other week....
