priming the pump
« on: April 19, 2013, 07:29:40 pm »
hi all, got myself a wheelie bin trailer which has fitted a little used 6,5hp loncin with a gearbox to the pump. It's been free from water all winter so needs priming,  I've done this by pouring water down the intake tube however only a trickle of water comes out the other side or out of the lance! Any ideas as to what the issue may be, I'm probably being a numpty but I'm not keen on running the engine over without water flowing through the pump for fear it'll seize!!!

Please help!

try running it with the lance off first, if it doesn't pull the water through it could be a multitude of things fomr something simple to and air intake to something more mechanical like a cracked piston, unloader valve sticking.... check for air intake first by pressure feeding it with a tap and look for leaks, if it leaks from the pump chances are it's a piston cracked, sometimes a seal can leak but not usual on american / european pumps now as most of the manufacturers now use dripless seals

either leave it off the hose or take the hose off altogether, this will help prime it as there will be less pressure

i took the hose off and ran a normal hose in the p washer in let hose, guess this forced water into the pump and pushed the air out. started working straight away, left if for a few mins to ensure it was free of air . now it works perfectly....
