how the hell do you remove a starter motor from a GX 390 funny thing I've done it once before this time no chance although I have removed most of it and the petrol tank as truck mounted I can't see much on that side

Never done a gx390 but I know on the honda GD it's just 2 12mm bolts, you need a socket with extension as they are right down near the front of the starter and you go in from the back, although #i can't see any on that picture so not sure.. once the bolts are removed then it should slide out with a bit of a wiggle

thanks for the reply I undone everything what you see is what is left of the starter motor no casing nothing just the brushes left the screw is stopping the teeth things from coming out

Two bolts on the starter housing through the crankcase. Look from the rear of the starter they are roughly 180 degrees apart ..take them out and hit it with a hammer and piece of wood.http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj111/airforceuk/starter_zps760ebbfc.jpg[/img]]

You have removed the rotor from the brush set. There was no need to remove that end to remove the starter. Now you need to replace the four brushes into the holders and then replace the rotor - tape each one in, refit the rotor and then remove the tape to release the brushes. The brushes may need renewal but the local plant or starter and alternator place would be your best bet.

Ok the magnets will repel the stator so sort the brushes into the housing shown in the photo by the pair of philips screws clearly pictured. Re assemble the rotor so the comm protrudes into the brush area having retained the brushes and their springs in their slots. Did the brushes come in a cassette or loose ? The comm ( the copper segmented round thing on the rotor ) should be cleaned gently with fine emery to ensure a good electrical contact with the brushes. Merely reassemble reverse order of disassembly. The two bolts as stated hold the whole shooting match to the engine and should be the last fitted. Why do you want to change the brushes as they don't look excessively worn ? did they move freely in the slots, all touch the comm and was the comm clean ?

The reason I was trying to take the starter motor of his sounded like a dead battery very slow and hardly turned so I thought it was the brushes
 I think I sussed it now a bad earth as I was using a 12 V  light could not get an earth on the engine only on the bolts that hold it down and at the quick connector high-pressure hose
found miniature cable ties great for holding back the brushes
