« on: April 02, 2013, 06:51:12 pm »
Can anyone please help me my batteries on my pf system keep going dead I have them on trickle charge every night but after 1 job next morning their dead and only work if the van is running

If they need replacing can I replace with normal car batteries instead of leisure batteries

Thanks

Sub zero temps hammer batteries, have you got them on a split relay charge?

If it's just one of those solar panel trickle chargers they aren't suitable in our field.

It's all 18 months old the charger shows its charging but they don't appear to be holding their charge

When batteries fail they go to fully charged almost immediately.

How many amp hours is it?

Same problems with my webasto systems. I run 2 batteries crossed over, and all is connected to a trickle charger. Anyway, leisure batteries are normally deep cycle, and i spoke to an auto electrician, well the guy at my local webasto dealer and explained my issues. He says as the batteries are getting a constant charge, you are messing them up. You need to remove the batteries at least once a month, or even better once a week, stick a light on the batteries to run them flat, then mains charge them. I have started to do this, so time will tell. He says the Ambulance/Army service are constantly going through batteries due to this very reason!

Steve roach thank for taking the time to talk to me
What Steve did suggest is maybe the charger is charging the vehicals battery first so it's showing a full charge but not on the leisure ones its a possible thought.

Why on earth has no one come up with a solution to this

I'm not an expert but dont think you can use a car battery (unless as an emergency stand in) as a car battery isnt designed to be used constantly without the engine running. I think leisure batteries are similar (or the same) as what they use in caravans, these are designed to be used for various duties other than starting a car.
Cheers

Have you tried topping up the battery acid before charging?
