I have never bought anything on my doorstep. People who try to sell me anything on my doorstep, whether it's windows, kitchens, or subscriptions to newspapers are told to go away.

I would never try to sell anything at someone's doorstep.

Its not selling its offering a service!
Selling is when you sell extensions and conservatories and that costs thousands!
Takings off all first cleans till march 7th 2014
October  total=  cleaned  extra per month
November = cleaned extra per month
Total £  so far.

You see, the good thing is, I don't care what anyone at the door thinks. I ask them if they got my flyer, and then ask them if they are interested or not. Some will, some won't, so what, who cares? On to the next door.

Simple really.

Do you not get annoyed when you get cold called?

Call it what you want. I don't want people coming to my door even if they are offering me something for nothing.

It does annoy me when I have personally put flyers through someone's door on numerous occasions and they have spotted me on the street and said 'oh I have been looking for a window cleaner'.  ::)roll

If you are asking if I get annoyed with leaflets coming through my door the answer is yes, but rather that than have to speak to another human being. Face to face.

I dont get why you are so against canvassing for gaining new custom??. It purely is 2nd to none against anyother method. There is no other way to gain customers so fast and so compact with such little outlay than to simply canvas. Its not a dreaded cold call at all as soon as i say im a window cleaner 99% of the time they relate with me and say good luck with building etc. its a service that everybody wants if they havnt got a cleaner(if they can afford it or dont do it themselfs).
I know you have a great business that was passed down to you and you build with leafletting and fair play to you but this is a canvassing thread and im always for the canvassing posts and the possitives in canvassing as thats what makes me get out and do it, i love hearing other success stories also i like to give mine and give  motivation to others regarding canvassing. Its a no brainer for newbies wanting a round built with minimal expence in minimal time. I get untolds of emails and phonecalls about canvassing and advice on best ways to go about it etc and everytime it has helped them out. Maybe if a funny confident guy knocked on your door your wife would sign up with them if you wouldnt??. Thats another plus with knocking an area twice within 6 months. Always someone else to answer the door who isnt such a moody negative person.

Nope, and I learned years ago never to second guess what people are thinking. The point Mick made is it's a great way to build fast and mostly compact work. I'm building a business or adding to a business. Why on earth would I worry about what someone thinks about me knocking on their door? I'd hate to have to drive from every job to the next, or move my vehicle every job I go to.

I stopped worrying about whether custies want their windows done in the rain etc. Who cares? If they don't want their door knocked or windows cleaned in rain, so what? Next door and someone else does want it.

I think I see this the same way Mick and a lot of others do. Takes real bottle for some of these guys to stick away that much rejection. Hats off to 'em IMO. I don't need guts, I enjoy canvassing, but full respect to those who hate it but do it anyway.

It's not that I'm against window cleaners canvassing, I am against all cold calling in principal.

Moody negative person?? How about relaxing in their own home only to be disturbed by a cold call?

I get pestered constantly by call centres phoning me at home, drives me nuts. To me it's the same thing.

Its a good job that not everybody is like you then!!!

Out of interest do you get imaginative ways of being told to 'go away'?

A friend of mine told me he uses the line when he gets a cold call from a call centre:

"sorry now is not a convenient time, can you give me your home number and I'll call you back later"

Nope. I could think of better put downs than that one though. Do you expect people that do canvass to stop canvassing now because they never thought of people not liking cold callers?
How did you build your business? Leaflets and sat at home waiting for work to come in? I don't know you so I'm curious.

Like I said, I have no right to criticise the way anyone goes about their business.

We built the business entirely on leaflets. In the beginning it was pretty much a full time job. We had another business that we were winding down at the time, so time was split between the two. There was certainly no sitting about waiting.

Do you get people who are clearly at home but just blatantly ignore you?

Well aren't you worried about people being annoyed about leaflets stuffed into their letterbox?
Do you see what I mean? Some people can't handle rejection, it's a basic fear, so totally normal
