peugeot expert in for its mot
« on: February 20, 2013, 07:45:10 pm »
failed on one thing
badly worn offside rear axle bushing (infact its hanging out), guess its down to the weight the vehicle is carrying daily. Anyhow bit of a horror story bearing in mind its a £20 rubber bushing, its gonna cost approx £250-£300 to replace it ! Garage saying they have got to drop the sub frame and remove the axle to do it.
:-[ anybody else had similar happen ?

I'm no mechanic but would lowering the subframe give access to the nearside one as well.  Just wondering if paying a bit extra would be worthwhile and get both sides done as if the offside has gone, the nearside may follow not too long after.
Possibly a stupid question as I know little about fixing motors.
yes, sorry should have said , they are going to do both at the same time for that reason.
Its a mates garage, not that I am getting a special deal, but I have no reason not to trust in what he's saying.
His mechanic reckons it will be a real ball ache to do without dropping the sub frame and removing axle because they do not have the specific removal and pressing tool to do it in situ.
Just for peace of mind I rang a peugeot specialist garage that would have the tool and was still quoted 3 hrs work inc. parts for £300.

Judt had both replaced on my scudo.

Thanks for the offer windiewasher, I am in Brighton
I wish I had more time to shop around now but unfortunately do not.
The mot guy in garage next door said he had replaced before in situ without tool in less than 2 hours, my friends mechanic thinks otherwise but I have asked him to try to keep labour reasonable, booked in this morning, take a deep breath and hope for the best  :(

Not really. Take off the vat, materials and bits for a service and the bushes themselves and he has made virtually nothing. Compare that to the wfp window cleaners hourly rate with no business premises to pay for!!

Yes, had I the time I could well have found cheaper, infact I know one round the corner from me cheapest in town but can take days to get work done with them as they are always busy, time I did not have, all the shopping around would have cost me just as much in lost working hours.

thats very true there mate, when i need something done the cost of actually doing it is quite minor compared to the time it takes to do etc, and nothing is worse than sitting there with no vehice, it feels aweful
