Faulty flow controller?
« on: February 06, 2013, 05:05:38 pm »
Ive got a digital flow controller which I've had for about 18 months but just lately it has been turning itself on which means a build up of water and sometimes an empty tank and flooded van! So if I rememeber I disconect it from my battery!
Does anyone know why this happens?

Hi Kleano

What brand of controller do you have? and is the pump pressure switch in line?

Its Variflow mate. It did same thing last year then since the summer it was ok for a few months then after the cold snap in December it started running on again!

Winproclean will be along soon; he's the fount of all knowledge when it comes to flow controllers - he should be able to help you.

Ok I have a few more questions to try get to the bottom of this.

Is the pressure switch connected? Do you disconnect the hose line at night? Is there any tap on the hose line or tank outlet?

This is an unusual issue with the controller. It is 18 months old and working as you would expect in normal use? Is it a standard controller or is it Charger or other type?

May sound silly but do you have any solenoids or other device connected to the same battery? I have not come across  below freezing temp effecting the electronics in this way previously.

Having switched the unit of using the enter key on the 3 button display the control will go into a shut down mode and would only be activated by pushing either the up/down button.

Again may sound daft is anything leaning against the control? or possibly fallen against it?

Thank you for the info. It is a standard set up with the battery powering the Pump and controller.

Is there a fuse in line between the battery and controller? Do you have any kind of trickle charge relay set up?

I have been talking this over with engineers. Is it possible a joint or connector has frozen and popped off the tank or hose line?
Freezing would cause expansion and force the joint off.

Also Is it possible anything was leaning against the control. This is such an unusual occurrence for the controller to switch its self on.
At 18 months old it would have the low battery cut off. I am very intrigued by this, and would like to understand what is causing it.

The more information the better we can understand what is happening

Yes it does have a low battery flashing light on it. Also there is an inline fuse that is inserted into the wiring. The actual controller is screwed to the plylined arch so nothing could obstruct it in any way!

Can you take a picture of the controller and connections and post or email it? It may help to see the set up. Is it possible that water has got in to the unit?
