Right guys,

Im back again after getting so much great advice about my website issue.

I've just joined Twitter, never really bothered with it before, but thought id give it a shot, only just working out how all the #'s and @'s work.
What's the best way to get geographical followers? I don't mind if all my friends follow me (originally from Australia so most of my mates are over there, no good for getting new customers) but i was looking at trying to get all the Glaswegians to follow me, so i can promote to them, and their friends, and their friends friends friends!

Tips?

Also, i usually post my business page updates on Facebook, how can i link it so that whatever i post on facebook, appears on my twitter?

The best way to get followers is to follow people, quite often they will reciprocate. Then, concentrate on posts which people might want to re-tweet. Its a good idea to not concentrate on solely business posts, otherwise people suffer from 'advertising blindness'.

If you google it, there are apps to get your facebook updates to post to twitter, or vice versa. Just be aware of the character limit on twitter if you do it fb>twitter.

I find twitter a waste of time if I'm honest, but my mate who's a car valeter gets a bit of business off it. I suppose its like anything else - you get back what you put in.

I have my Twitter page just for work related stuff and have it set to forward onto my FB business page ......there are links/feeds for both of these on my websites now !!

Got work via Twitter & FaceBook, so it is worth doing as there is no outlay (yet  :-\)

I've been checking out Twitter for a few weeks now.  Has anyone actually had a lead from it yet? I haven't.  I know twitter is just one piece of a bigger on-line picture, but I just don't get it.

Adwords works tho...

I wouldn't send your facebook stuff to twitter. Keep it separate and appropriate for each medium. Also don't get into the follow you follow me thing, that's just stupid. Tweet about what you are doing, what's happening locally generally, be generous and communicate with people who have a local audience relevant to you. Be consistent and patient, which hardly anyone is.

Twitter is good for finding out what Kim Kardashin is having for lunch.

Return on effort is not worth the daily bother for a local carpet cleaner

That may be true, but networking, in all it's many forms is a valid way to market a business - Twitter is a networking tool also (but I can't make it work for me, yet).

Warren is probably right, especially when most people expect something for nothing. All I would say is if you post on here once a week then one or two 140 characters surely aint hard work especially if you get even a couple of jobs from it. Also you can use it to build authority on and offline which translates to the prices you can command.

And as David says its a good networking tool if you are decerning when it comes to following and engagement.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

What I do is blow smoke up the a*rs of accounts with lots of followers that will retweet me.

In other works I'd tweet

Big thanks to @Ealingcouncil for another superb recycling collection today!

Getting work from twitter, facebook, linkedin, is not the point, search engines crawl social media, you associate your posts with your buisness and google catches that. the more posts, the more notice is taken of your website, dont expect immediate results try to have a build up of quality followersand from that you will get results

Thanks for the replies guys.

Wynne, so in other words, just tag in local things, people, groups etc, try and keep it all relevant. And keep it informative?

Im guessing I have to @ things so it will show up in the searches? Or can I just # things?

Matt, yes informative, contribute something of substance, relevance interest. And has been said google is desperate to get social indicators, maybe not so much now but the writing is on the wall and a lot of seo guys don't like it because a. You can do it yourself and b. it's too much like hard work for them.

If you search # with local places ie #Glasgow you can look for local people and what is going on in your area.  Follow local events nod RT and you will get local followers.  Then you could put offers up or tweet about why to keep your carpets clean etc.
If you put #Glasgow in your tweets local people will find you.
Hope this helps

Yep. It's just one more social signal that helps Google decide that you are a legitimate business.
