Whirlaway questions..
« on: February 04, 2013, 02:09:18 pm »
Right, The image below, what could be causing the nozzles to wear like this? My guess is that too much water is being trapped under the cover, and the bar is spinning through it? this is only from probably...20 hours use since new nozzles?

Next question, Did a job today, smooth tarmac. Some of it cleaned perfectly with the whirlaway, and some of it striped really bad. Not normal striping, more like...two clean lines with a dirty line in the middle. The dirty line was semi clean, just not as clean as the lines either side.

I was going the normal speed i always go, never had this problem on tarmac or monoblock. looked to me like the nozzles were only cleaning a certain area, and not reaching anywhere else. Yes, i was overlapping my passes.

The nozzles, if I remember correctly are 03/25..(21lpm pump) should i go for a wider spray angle? the next angle up is 40, wont a 40 degree hit the cover?

Last question, From the picture, are my nozzles the right way? or should they be turned more? The line/groove on the nozzle is in line with the spray bar.

Cheers,

Matt

Matt i would say that wear is from you catching something la ike stones, etc, also your stripes sound to me like where you have over lapped and so have 'double cleaned' the over lapped areas, if you get me?
I would change the nozzle to a 15 degree fan, this may ellimnate the stripping as the spray pattrern will be more concentrated and higher impact.
thats what i would do any way  ;D

Ps your nozzle position is fine, i just feel as though your 25 degree pattern isnt powerfull enough and also could be 2 wide that the water hits the sides, inturn possibly slowing the arm down which inturn could cause the stripping aswell

Cheers mate..

Makes sense.. Ill get some nozzles ordered.

I did two big tarmac jobs a while ago, lots of loose stones etc.. could have worn the nozzles down a fair bit then i suppose. Looks really smooth though, you would think with stones it would be all rough and chipped..

Ahh well, ill get some different nozzles and give it a try. I've got so many nozzles already!!

The correct nozzle size for a 21 is a .65 which is obviously divided by 2 so as you cannot run odd nozzles so you should run 2 x .35 @ 15 or 25 degrees which depends how stubborn the dirt is and hence how quickly you can clean. The wear is the sand thats airbourne under the skirt and because of this wear the spray bar can leak which could be responsible for your uneven clean. Get 2 old nozzles and block them with ball bearings or get 2 1/4" plugs and fit them in the spray bar and pull the trigger - this will show any leaks in the bar - half throttle will be enough.

I've just been thinking. I think the nozzles on it are already 03/15's..

In that case, any ideas on the striping? or could it just be like Lee says, and i need to tighten up the overlap a bit?

Thats the thing though mate, the clean isnt really un even, it just looks like the nozzles arent covering the complete area under the cover.

This tarmac was pretty smooth, not overly dirty, and i was taking my time. just odd how it striped in some areas, then not in others. the areas it striped, i was cleaning up/down, then the areas where it was fine, i was cleaning arcoss..

So its either got a leak, a parially blocked nozzle or spinning slowly

Hi Matt

i had something like this last year, where the nozzle was wearing down, it might sound silly but what are the skirt brissles like? mine had worn down meaning that the nozzle was spinning closer to the ground, maybe just need a new skirt on it?

Check the height of the nozzles from the ground. Allen key on bearing housing to adjust. Use good quality nozzles at 25 degr ...cheap Asian ones wear rapido.

Matt,

It look's like the arm is to close to the floor to me so making contact with the surface you are cleaning, only slightly but enough to do damage, as the bur on the nozzle indicates this.
I don't use a whirl-away, but I would have the same problem with mine if to close to the floor.

Thanks for the replies guys,

The nozzles have decent clearance, and there is no castors on mine as its a 20".. I might get a new skirt, and ive got some spare castors here from an old 18" i night bolt onto this one, make it a bit easier to push around.

More worried about the striping..

I have ordered two 035/25 degree and two 035/15 degree.. Gonna test them both and see which ones are better.
