Should you keep the receipts for food and drink that you consume at work?

No, I don't think the tax man would see that as being an allowable expense.

Of course you should. Subsistence is tax deductible......within reason.

thats is talking about if your saying overnight some where because your working away, not your lunch because your 10 miles away from home - they would say you would need to eat anyway if you was running your business or not employed or self employed. Of course you can put it down on your proft and loss account if u notice on a tax return it has box for allowable expenses you wont b able to claim your lunch..

If the work you undertake takes you away a fair distance from your base, then refreshments costs are a reasonable expense that I claim for under motor and travel costs.
I have 6 days a month on rounds/work that are between 10-30 miles away, in these cases its not practicable to return to base to get dinner and if I'stay and collect then I am stuck in these areas till sixish so I have my tea there and claim that as well. As long as you don't' take the p**s than I would consider this a reasonable expense, the worst thing that can happen is that you/accountant have to convince the tax man if he disagrees.

+1 mate.

My accountant told me the above. If it is unreasonable for you to return back to base for dinner, you can buy it and claim it back. When I go away for business or entertain a client, we eat and drink well. ;D It is not professional to do business in Macdonalds! All of this is acceptable in the eyes of the taxman. People the country over spend hundreds on a meal and wine, entertaining clients everyday. They put it through their business as it is what is expected in their field. Don't abuse it and you'll be fine. :)
