spoke to a chap the other day who knows someone in the hse and he said to me that window cleaners are not allowed to work of ladders anymore even tho they do
1 if a hse officer is ever informed of them working of ladders or sees them doing it they will stop them not sure of the penalty if there is one but the words shut you down were used
2 if you fall of on someonce property weather you are insured or not and died your customer would be held responsible for your death for allowing you to do it.

what are peoples thoughts on this ? i started on a ladder but would i ever go back to it not in a million years earning are low in comparison and the danger levels are silly also you are limited on the customers you can work for and in the feuture maybe none.

let the opinions and anger fly in lol just for the record this is what i was told im not having a dig in anyway just looking for your views. i still use a ladder for gutters so im guessing im in the same boat with that work

I carry a ladder on my roof rack just for the odd gutter or gaining access to a flat roof etc.
Other than that I wouldn't use it for anything else!

this could be an interesting one so if i ring the hse personally they will say its absolutly fine to clean of ladders all day on my own with no one footing so tieing of oh and i can walk on roofs etc. iv got a funny feeling he knows what hes on about. i may be proved wrong tho if so fair doos il use my ladders more often for the odd requests

Glad you guys have looked into this as it put me off using ladders for anything. If I see him again I shall be telling him he talks out of his arce

when this first came about, not beeing allowed to use ladders i rang the  hse and was told it wasn't true, every one has to take care of there own health and safety, it is also about using ladders going below ground, so instead of trying to put people off using ladders we should spend time encourading people to use ladders safely.

This scenario happened to someone I know personally who doesn't tell lies and has no reason to make it up. I also heard of it happening to someone I don't know in the same week.
Bottom line is that you need to justify your use of ladders by way of a risk assessment. If you can justify why the wfp cannot be used, great. There are instances. But on standard houses, wfp are a safer alternative in the eyes of the H & S exec. You will struggle to justify ladders as opposed to wfp on a risk assessment for windows.

theres defanatlay some thing going on, last summer i got a call at 7.30am from hse guy who got my number of the van he asked if it would be possible to arange a interview  about risk assesment etc . i told him i dont use ladders anymore ,and i    i dont do commercial work any more . i was a bit peeed off at him ringing at that time dont call again at that time i said>
