What is the purpose of this fitting on the seals at each end of the membrane vessel?

Is it important as Ive lost the screw that's used to hold one of them in place.

It is the new style locking device for the white ring that holds the end cap in place. Technically without it the white ring could come off and then the end would pop off and water would go everywhere!

I wondered if that was it. Thanks Alex. Although I still can't see how it is meant to stop the white clip coming off. If its going to pop off this isnt going to stop, well I cant see how it'll stop it. Its just screwed to the white clip and thats it. Nothing else in the equation  ???
