Lay back and ride out the storm :?
« on: January 17, 2013, 06:24:36 pm »
It's not really that bad but for London/surrey being below 0 is quite rare today I went out to fill tank at a depot but all the transfer pipes were frozen not to mention it was   -3 today so called it off did some admin instead but now I'm thinking its gona get back to 5c+ in a few days is it really worth going out knowing you may face problems like tiny frozen Pencil jets water freezing on glass , just annoying things that happen etc etc ,

Is anyone els just gona wait till the Temperature rises?
I'm thinking I might enjoy a long weekend start Monday

I'm behind thou which i dont like as most might be since the holidays and now a day off yesterday and today which was annoying

I dont know what the problem is, we had just about our best day today, possible second best but a great days turnover. Seriously.

On before u northern lot have a go at me for being soft lol I used to live up north my self and used to go out in -10 the difference is I had no choice as the winters are normally longer and you get weeks where below 0 was the norm down south thou its not so you could just wait for it to pass ;)

I always say the big difference in north and south are in the north the weather is against you in the south the customers are against you so it evens out that way lol

But still I'm sure others might just be laying low for another day or 2 and we reach 4+
No more annoying problems or having to trad shops lol

So what do you do in summer work half a day? Impossible to have really good days in this weather unless you are not bothered about customer satisfaction, sorry !!

Thats absolute bollox. Why cant you do a good day in this weather. It wasn't freezing, it wasnt raining, it wasnt snowing and it wasnt windy. So whats making your day so firkin hard? You I would imagine.

We were on the glass by 9.00 and finished on the glass about 4.00 this afternoon.

Cant you do a full day. I know for a fact there were plenty of other guys out there cleaning for a full day today. Perhaps you're a fair-weather window cleaner.

At -7 you cannot clean without a hot water system IMO! The last 2 days we where on the job for 9 and the water froze on the glass straight away.
Point1.
You are slower because its slippery under foot.
point2.
You are slower going from job to job because its slippery under tyre.
point3.
You can only work till 4pm because of day light been lost.
point4.
I do not have a problem with cold weather working after 9 years working on a dock side loading ships in the middle of winter on night shift, believe you me window cleaning is a doddle in the cold.

No definately not my best day, but still a good day considering had a few problems with frozen pipes etc in the morning, and I definately work a bit slower when I'm cold.

IMO some of you are using the cold weather as an excuse for not getting off your bum and working.your either ill prepared, inexperienced, lazy or just plain thick and not prepared in advance! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

others will have worse weather depending which areas of the uk you work and its genuinely impossible to work.

if you use a very high flow rate, start a bit later if really cold and have prepared with a heater in the van overnight its amazing how much work you can clean in 5-6 hours!

but if its as bad as its forecast tomorrow i defo will be having the day off and chilling out for a day or two! ;D ;D ;D

best wishes to you all

Point1. Wasn't minus 7 here
You are slower because its slippery under foot.
point2. Wasn't wet on the ground so not icey.
You are slower going from job to job because its slippery under tyre.
point3. As above
You can only work till 4pm because of day light been lost.
point4. Dont usually work past 4 anyway, so nothing different there.
I do not have a problem with cold weather working after 9 years working on a dock side loading ships in the middle of winter on night shift, believe you me window cleaning is a doddle in the cold.

Ive worked outdoors all my working life, initially in farming, in Denmark (down to minus 30) then landscaping for 11 years and now window cleaning for 14 years. Its not about what youve done in your career, its what you've said. I don't care about what you've done workwise Kent in an earlier life, thats not what we're discussing. I beg to differ about not being able to earn cracking money in this weather. Fact of the matter is we had a cracking day today if you'd prepared better you probably would have been able to do something yourself. it wasn't minus 7 in kent throughout today. Assuming thats where you are by your username.
