cold windows
« on: December 06, 2012, 09:36:49 am »
Tried working yesterday morn but the first window I cleaned turned straight into Ice.  That was it and off home. Later that afternoon while I was off to pick up my grand daughter from school I came across a cleaner who said he had been out all day and it wasnt a problem because he had a hot water system. Do these hot water systems do the business like he said ?. I was also wondering that if certain rooms in a house for eg. a spare bedroom or unused conservatory during winter that arent heated internally will they freeze quicker than warmed heated rooms , if so then its nearly certain that some windows will ice over quicker, how do you explain to customers to convince them,,,,, or do most of you just leave cleaning until the weather changes

Yes windows on unheated rooms do tend to ice up more easily.
Also i've had triple glazed windows ice up before because they are so efficient at keeping the heating within the house.
The double glazed windows didn't ice up at all (on the same property)!?!

conservatories do freeze up when really cold yes, the guy only told you half the story becasue hot water freezes to when it gets cold :)

when it starts to freeze up there is nothing any of us can do unless we use a dryer on every window (now theres a thought) hot wash and blow dry!

Hilland you went home how cold was it 4th house i did yesterday had 2 bay windows froze up on both at front of bays but the sides were fine just kept going and all the other houses were ok .

As Ian has said stay away from connys if really cold and unheated porches although i will always test by spraying a little water in the bottom corner of a pane of glass and if it freezes within 10 seconds or less then leave alone and do rest of house as normally ok . Mike

that seems a good idea mate. i checked temp in my car when setting off and it read 2.5 , however when i arrived at the job , 1 minute from my house and after the glass icing i checked again the temp and it read 0.0. i think the car reading was wrong cos if it read 0.0 i wouldnt haver bothered, but thanks for info mate.

Sometimes you have to take into account that if people go out to work at 7am and you clean the windows at 9am then the glass will have gone cold or colder as their central heating will have been off for 2hrs or more so could freeze up .

The temp reading on my truck drops by 3-4 degrees on the way to work but i have a 5-10 min drive , Also i have a cold system and have lost very little work in the past due to cold and snow . Mike
