To be honest i dont agree with what you are doing, i payed good money for my round and have a a few good friends who have to. I brought this subject up in the pub the other night. The jist of the converstion wich everyone agreed on is put politley we wouldent be very happey if you just came into your round and canvesed the area wich we have payed and worked hard on. I meen at the end of the day this is our buissness and you wouldnt go into a garage and start selling your own fuel would you. If you think i am wrong would you please let me know.

When you built up your round how did you make sure you didn't knock on anyones doors who already had a window cleaner?

There is nothing wrong with what Doorknockers do...

I am currently canvassing for my own work, and I meet a lot of people who already have a window cleaner and wouldn't want to change over to me, which is fine by me.

I had a conversation with a window cleaner today who uses doorknockers.

He is very happy with his arrangement with them. He has told them that he only wants jobs at £XX and over.  From the info I have gleaned about them you name the price that you want and they go out and look for work on your terms.

They apparently first ask if the prospect needs a window good window cleaner.
 If they get a no they just move on.

I have done a h*lluva lot of canvassing myself and use exactly the same approach. I see nothing wrong at all in going to an area and simply asking if they need a good window cleaner. If people are happy with their window cleaner they will tell you so. I NEVER try to undercut the existing window cleaner if they have one. Two reasons for this.  1.. I dont want to take someones living away from them.  2: If all they are interested in is price I dont want them as customers for obvious reasons.

I have no problem with another window cleaner canvassing or leafletting any area that I work in. I don't own my customers. Its the service and quality that I give them that keep them loyal to me.

I have never bought work but even if I had I would not think that I owned the right to all the window cleaning in that area. If a customer was to leave me for another cleaner based on price I wouldn't take them back if they asked. What I own is my relationship with my customers and its up to me to see that I protect that by giving good value for the price I charge. .

Window cleaning is a business like any other. I honestly cant see any difference to other service industries. In business there is always competition. We window cleaners are actually quite lucky in that most of us know there are moral guidelines and we stick by them.

I see nothing wrong in employing an organisation that sticks to "the rules".

I have never had any dealings myself with doorknockers so I am not biased in any way. I am just giving an opinion.

I bought my round off a friend of mine who inturn bought it of a friend and so on, so i didnt canvess it  i just bought a hole village and when i do canvass, i canvass within that village and dont go outside of it.

I'd firstly just like to thank Andy and Andrew for your positive support. THANKS!!!

And secondly, I'd just like to also say to Biscute that at the end of the day if the 'potential customers' are receiving a good quality clean from their current window cleaner then why would they change?

The pitch we use is a single question. 'Hi there, just wondering if you need a window cleaner?'. If the 'potential customer' says 'no thank you I already have one'. We simply say 'well thank you for your time anyway, goodnight'.

We do not try and poach customers from other local window cleaners. We are not a company that believes in 'hard sales' as it were.

But, I'd also like to thank you for your comments as it gives us, as a company, chance to explain how it is exactly that we work. So thank you also.
