waste pipe in winter
« on: November 29, 2012, 06:33:28 pm »
this is my first winter having the ro in the van as i`ve changed from a static system, now i havent got a problem keeping the van warm and i understant that if the fill hose freezes i`l stop producing. but what if the waste pipe freezes? Because is more of a dribble that comes out so thought it might freeze easier.

If you have a garage then best thing to do is to buy and IBC and move all the filters from van into a static system.

This can be filling during day when hopefully temps above freezing.

I used to have em on van but as you say the waste did freeze one time  :(

this is my first winter ...

[Pedant On] Winter does not start till 21st December and will continue until 20th March.[Pedant Off]

So, depending on your start up date, you may not yet have experienced your first Winter; we're still in Autumn.

P.S.  I've never had a problem with my waste water pipe freezing.  I think if the water is constantly on the move, it won't freeze.

P.P.S.  Don't quote me on that though.

Yeah it can. Mine did.

I took the filters inside and ran the pipe out to the IBC. Never bothered taking it back out in the spring.
Easier to keep an eye on it without going outside anyway

I run the waste pipe from ro into 8mm hose then lagged that, its 15 ft from drain on concrete floor and has never froze  .j.

If it's really cold as in the other winter it's a pita. I have a van mount Pure Freedom system and a small utility room at home and no garage where I can house the van. The poles and reel has to come inside as does the booster pump (that boosts water supply to RO from (2.5bar to 7/8 bar)), and the water supply and waste hoses. I have to remove the hozelock connecters underneath the van at night and reattach them in the morning and put a greenhouse heater in the van at night. I also have to drain down the tap in the garage to stop it freezing - which rarely works but I live in hope. Adds an hour and a half to the day all in all.

Then when you get out at 10am you find the water freezing on the glass 'cos the hoze is lying in snow. I've even parked my van such that the sun strikes the reel in an effort to keep it "warm" whilst I work. Then there's the ice-rink-beneath-the-window and the "am i gonna get sued when the little old lady breaks her hip on the ice i created", so you end up chucking salt everywere.

And you get in at 3:30 and its already -2. Joy.

if the waste pipe does freeze will the ro just stop running, or will it cause damage. the ro its self wouldn`t freeze due to in van heater.
