TNT - signing for parcels
« on: November 23, 2012, 05:20:11 pm »
I've had two packages delivered by TNT this week, on both of them in BIG RED LETTERS was the instruction to inspect both the packing and contents carefully before signing for them.

I can just imagine the driver's response if I said "Sorry mate, you'll have to wait while I unpack this lot and make sure none of it is damaged" - these lads are on tight schedules and get paid per delivery.

The notice goes on to say that if there is anything wrong, I should sign for it as 'damaged'.

I guess this is the courier trying to wriggle out of their duty of care in the handling of their customer's goods - if you don't check and there is a problem, they won't pay.

My feeling is that for all TNT deliveries  I'll sign as 'damaged' irrespective of the actual condition, then if the goods are OK and they question it I can say I made a mistake but if there is something wrong, I'm covered ;D

I see on quite a lot of parcels that signing 'unchecked' is not sufficient to cover you in the event of damage.

Tell gardeners of your problem I think TNT is subbing to Fed EX . Most time I get FED EX but this time it was also T N T.

Dear Forum Members,

I've spoken to TNT on behalf of our customers and asked for exact details on the correct course of action when checking and signing for goods.  They have advised as follows:

Examine the outside of the parcel carefully and if you see any evidence of damage you need to write "evidence of damage" when you sign.

After the courier has gone you then have 24 hours to check for damage and report if necessary to your supplier.  It isn't necessary to ask the courier to wait whilst you check the contents of the parcel.

I can also confirm that signing "unchecked" will not cover you in the event of a parcel being damaged.

If you sign without checking anything then you will not be covered by the couriers insurance for any damages incurred, nor will your supplier.

I hope that helps a bit.

Kirsty

Hi Kirsty,

Thanks for the info.

Still leaves room for problems, though.  The parcel arrives, no sign of damage.  I sign for it as normal and then when the courier has gone and I've opened the package I find the contents damaged.  This is the same situation as before these huge warning labels started appearing.

Then lets say there was some external damage which I didn't notice until the courier had gone, and the contents were damaged as well.  By the time I've ripped off the packaging the evidence of external damage has gone.  I make a (legitimate) claim for compensation and the Carrier company asks me if I examined the parcel before I signed - am I going to say no?  And is the driver going to admit he delivered damaged goods, even if he knew?

Unless the package was falling apart with bits dropping out (in which case I would have refused to accept it anyway)  I can't see there is any difference made by this new label.

Smacks a bit of desperation on the part of the Carriers, but in the end they can't opt out of their obligation to deliver parcels in good condition.
