Alkaline browning
« on: November 21, 2012, 05:43:19 pm »
looked at a stone floor clean today and whilst chatting potential custy said she gets her carpets cleaned by a company and the job had gone wrong. The carpets are wool & very light coloured, essentially white, not Hessian backed or any other natural fibre so its not cellulosic browning. There are lots of dirty looking spots which look like some one has gone round with dirty water trailing a small amount into lines/circles. Its weird! never seen alkaline browning so could be that. The job value was £250 ish to do four bedroom carpets and a room downstairs which for west yorks area is not the cheapest. I know which company it was and looked them up on the net -possible truckmount although they did not say specifically they use a truckmount, they also say they do low moisture. Tried to get a description of the machine all she said it was noisy - not much help there I suspect it was a portable. She has had the chap back 3 times he says its where he has not flushed the cleaning fluid out and it has made a bit of an improvement by re cleaning but it still looks bad. She says she has given up on him now - could not believe she has not pursued him into making a claim. She said he had started to get a bit shirty the last time she rang him!!!
In short these marks are not orange/yellow/brown they just look a bit dirty I am going to ask via email when quoting for stone floor if she wants me to do a test area to try to remove but does anyone think its alkaline problem. The backing is  polypropelene. What do you think?

Nope it was not wilsons and I am not saying who as the cust did not really want to tell me even though her carpets are a right mess. But it is not someone on this forum.
But can anyone tell me what they think caused those marks??

I can see a snake with a nose wearing a top hat in the right of the photo.........

....oops! That's the photographer's shadow ;D

Seriously, could it be a stain that was "hidden" in the carpet and has only come to light following the clean or a possible reaction between something spilt earlier and reacting with the cleaning solutions?

Does it feel sticky to the touch? In what condition was the carpet generally?

Could it be that the staining has come back through but worse a bit like a whack back but more spread?

Or even post spotting gone wrong?

Have you done any work on them? I think they may just rinse out, you could be the hero.

It's the base of his weeping sprayer full of watered down drain cleaner.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

The carpets are in really good condition, a top end kind of house. The photo I took is one of the marks that stood out the best they are in every room and are a mixture of spots circles its almost like someone took some dirty water and trickled it all over. Never seen anything like it. I have offered to do a test patch to see if they would come out. The chap in question has had three goes at removing but failed to sort it which is what's foxing me. It may be his inability, just seems odd. I looked at his site and he seems not to be a cheap skate at the dodgy end of the market. If its something to do with his product I am guessing its an alkalinity issue and go from there. We shall see. The marks are not in line with areas which have been spot cleaned

Hi Guys

I would try spot clean by hand using plain hot water, then Pureclean, then an enzyme and also some  sodium met to see what responds.

If we walked into this with no history we would think it is a straightforward clean, maybe it is?

Cheers

Acid rinse maybe. Could be caused by high ph clean and not rinsed properly.

That fits with the explanation the CCer gave to the customer. Got the stone floor job now so I'll do a test when I am back there. Just a bit surprised the guy could not get himself out of the problem on the 2nd not to mention 3rd visit. Cheers all
