Another magazine scam
« on: November 16, 2012, 05:52:13 pm »
This time watch out for someone selling something to do with a Checkatrade magazine.
Checkatrade do not produce a magazine so add this one to the likes of Police, Ambulance, fire Brigade, hospitals, estate agents etc
It's a scam which no doubt will centre around the Liverpool-St Helens-Manchester line somewhere

Are you accussing all us North Westerners as being dodgy ;D

I think I had a call about this a few months ago demanding money for some for some artwork they said I'd ordered from them.

In a word...... yes  8)
I've yet to have had a phone call which was clearly a publication scam which doesn't start with the code 0161 or who hasn't got an accent from the areas I mentioned before.

Had a magazine (more like pamphlet) through the door not long ago from Checkatrade Neil.

Morning Hectard, where have you been hiding?  :-*

evening Gary...

wonder of wonders.... I appear to be top of the organic listings on google for this area (probably by default as others get punished for keeping their sites up to date) and keep getting phone calls for work type stuff....

It really is a bugger you know.  ;D

Had a fire service magazine scam me a few years ago, took them to court and won, got a nice pay out. They where a genuine company but lied about publication and took three payments out of my bank without permission, got it all back with interest. Never again.

Hang-on, I've missed something here - what scam?

I've been contacted my someone (in the NW) selling advertising space here:
http://www.apltd.org.uk/CCGInteractive.html

and here:

http://www.alliedpr.co.uk/magazine/

They don't take payment until 3 months after the first publication.

scammed maybe a strong word david but the basic rule is, your the marketing manager of your company so its up to you to spend your advertising budget wisely, if some one calls you to advertise in there magazine you firstly ask for a copy to be sent to you. if they can't then don't, you then ask where these publication are distributed, once you know, go check, if there not there then don't. maybe ask who there printers are and contact them on real amounts printed (not sure if they would give you that info though) but basically do your homework before advertising in any cold callers avenues.

ps.... even if you have heard of them, it might be worth checking they are for real, i get 10 google and orange companies a week ringing me, and yet i know none of them are really google and orange, they just make it sound like they are.

pps I've only ever been had once and they were genuine, yellow pages, total waste of money for me personally, all though, ive just had a £200 job from a free listing so i'm slowly clawing it back ;D

pps. my rule is simple, if someone calls, they either want there carpets cleaned of they can do one. simples. all though i do entertain my self with them when i'm bored, which is mean but hey!! they called me right?

If someone parts with money from a telephone call emanating from 0161 dialing code from a scouser/manc offering any services then there's no hope for them in business.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

Can I pay for it with my Canadian Lottery cheque, it's a bit more than your stuff is worth but you can pay me the balance in cash.

Even if they were genuine and most are not don't spend any money on this type of thing, it doesn't work.

That is a bugger. Change your phone number a bit quick or put it on silent and ignore it.
