I would say looking at current trends people will be swapping there laptops for tablets for
general browsing at home in the next few years  so showing up decent on tablet will count

and is this who, when & why applicable to us as carpet cleaners?

who is the main searcher on mobile devices? i would say the younger generation not the biggest user of carpet cleaners

when do they search?

why use a mobile and not the PC at home or at work.

my post is a little confused but I don't think a website that is designed for mobiles is not a priority, ok if it can be done as a normal design of the website but its not a deal breaker

It's not whether it's mobile, that's old hat. What Google are wanting to foist on us is context. Who, where, why.

You don't hear much about reviews, local directories and reputation management but is even more valid now than ever.

Responsive is the way forward. Its about making a enjoyable user experience. If your site is awkward to use no matter if it is on a pc, tablet or phone then people will leave before contacting you and move onto your competition who has an easier to use site.

How many times have you gone to find something on a site and been looking all over the place, got fed up and gone to another.

Research says you have around 10-20 seconds before the user decides to stay or leave

Some people don't have internet (or are not allowed for personal use) use at work, so use their mobiles to search for things (I know I used to do it when I was in employment).

So your saying bounce rate is now an important factor? How does google know what your bounce rate is if you dont have webmaster tools installed on said website?

mobile users account for between 7 & 10% and are usually people on the fly.

The browsing experience is probably not as good, so if it is enhanced then all the better.

Do people on the fly using mobiles book jobs? Yes they certainly do, so if you've a responsive or mobile site then all the better!

Mike I think you missing the point on responsive wesites
its not just a two horse race desktop and mobile but tablets of varying screen sizes also
have to be catered for

I agree not many people will look for a  carpet cleaner using there mobile but I bet a fair few are looking
on tablets of varying sizes currently an I bet a lot more will be in the future

I pretty much agree with what John (Mark) says above but with one slight difference.

I prefer a separate mobile page within the existing site. That way you get a site that displays with large (thumb sized) buttons and has short text that is readable on a mobile.

For tablets, you can display the PC site.

Strange all this! Will this be another millenium bug thing where all machine with digital displays were due to pack up the moment midnight 31 Jan 1999 happened when of course nothing of the sort happened...... other than it made people rush out and buy electrical gear in the preceeding November/December.
I knock my websites up on 1and1 without any fancy preferences towards mobile devices, yet when I ask my customers to show me what they see on their devices (ie my sites) they all look totally fine and readable just like any main pc.
I can see this just being another way to get you to part with your money when operating systems will probably be programmed to make the adjustments themselves, in order that the user can still access sites.

Just out of interest Neil, have you tried to integrate a blog on a static site using 1 & 1?

I stopped using them because some of their stuff was a real pain to deal with. I know someone who is having real trouble doing things because 1 & 1 don't use C Panel (correct me if I'm wrong, I left them a while ago).
