I wouldn't worry about the people that buy a Vax Derek, most of them would never pay to have a carpet cleaned anyway, or are using it for spot cleaning if they have pets/kids.  Those that would have paid but thought they might save a few quid will find out it's hard work for little result and then pay you anyway in future, so it justifies your higher price once they realise how hard work it is to do a proper job.  Just my thoughts
