« on: November 06, 2012, 03:29:26 pm »
Hi,
Looking at a Vauxhall Combi Van.  Anybody Using One? If So Would You Recommend It And What Size Tank Will Fit In?
  Cheers,

Search for combo van in search box, loads have asked before. But here goes, I have one an ex British gas van, its the 1.3 cdti 2000kg, so it can take a bit more weight. I have an upright 350 litre tank in it and its long enough to store a pole or two inside, as long as its not much long than say 6 foot when collapsed. I would recommend you get one with a side loading door if you can as it does make life a little easier when filling tanks etc. Only word of warning would be if overloaded they eat clutches so if you are going to get one and need a larger tank than 400 litres, dont! if you dont get the 2000kg model i would have no larger than a 350 litre tank, and when I say I have an upright tank its actually one of these and it fits very well.

i had a R reg 1.7 combo van for 7 years with 400lt flat tank the only thing that i had to replace on it about 3 occasions was the starter motor, in the last of its days the clutch did go on it (but was used a workhorse week in week out for those 7 years). i would have got one again had it not been the need for a bigger tank, good on diesel as well.

right, here goes. 17.. has a payload of 600 kg. 1300 payload: 743 kg.

400 litre tank plus equipment for two windies.

BAD POINTS.

the drop links go fairly frequently, the front engine mount needs re-designing and the 1300 diesel is a fiat engine. Apart from that theyre an ok van. If your doing distance get the 1700' if its around town get the 1300

Check the floor mats and see if they are wet if they are walk away I learn that the hard way, iv only just sold mine for a transporter but I had a 400 tank with a shelf above to put my hose reel on it was a brilliant little van to be fair. If you will be happy with a 400 tank I would get another one but check the floor mats.

I would never have a system that produces water in the van out of a 400 liter tank you are only using 50% of the water you  have to carry around, which is a very expensive. This extra weight you will waste fuel , put pressure on the van. Static water system is the way forward unless you have no place to produce  pure water.

Walk away because A you've got a footwell of water!!!!! B if it gets into the wiring loom you will have to replace it and that will cost a LOT.

Why I am carrying around 50% I won't use, I filter the water my clean waters goes into my tank and then the waste goes outside. What's the extra 50%?

I glad you filter before so your tank is pure but there are many that fill with tap water and filter on the run.

i get water in the left footwell in my combo. only in the passenger side though. it looks like my windscreen isnt fitted porperly and thats what i put it down to. i thought the rain was getting in where the windscreen isnt sealed properly? im a bit worried now you said this?

plus my electrics are dodgy anyway. i have to slap the dashboard to get the dash to light up some times!

The "Fiat" diesel engine in the 1.3 Combo's and Doblo's (I've got one in mine) is actually a Suzuki designed unit and the good thing is it has a camchain which does not need replacing at regular intervals.

It's a game of three halves!

Haha I know what you mean, yes I think my water was coming in from my screen
It's worth checking the drain points at the back of the engine bay to see if there blocked,

Got a 2004 reg 1700Di with 500 litre tank - no carpets so little noisy oh and gets water in passanger footwell but pulls like a steam train and great to drive thanks to alloys and lowered stiffened suspension - not a boy racer as bought it like that - will see me thru to March when going in for a Partner 850
