Paul are you able to use a DI or are you using an RO which means if you are using 400 litres a day to clean windows a further 400 ltrs will be waste going down the drain which may cause the water board to investigate  never had any probs in over 4 yrs . Mike

yes mm im on ro plus i fill lots of barrels , so is it true will they be able to see more water than normal being used from on or around my adress , bob if i did end up on buisness rates is it dear like roughly are we talking 10 , 20 quid a week or more , i do use a hell of a lot over the week and will be using even more soon when i get my trolly

I've been on a meter at my current address for 5 yrs and been window cleaning for nearly 2yrs - RO van mount 500ltr tank working for roughly 4 days a week

With Anglian water

My original bill averaged around the £25 a month mark before i was window cleaning

They came and did a meter reading about 6 mths ago and have increased my bill to £101 a mth (which I assume includes backdated payments to the last reading?)

I enquired about a better tarrif (business, or anything else they offered) and according to Anglian water, with my usage, the domestic rate I'm on is the same as their green business rate and I wouldn't be any better off - so basically it's stayed on the domestic rate

It is a bill you have to pay but at least you can put it down as an expense , I would rather pay for something that is helping me earn a good wage than giving the tax man more money .   . Mike

You are doing something wrong you haven't informed them what you are doing. In this area you can be fined up to £5000 and pay court costs and back payments. You can not be put on business rates as it a domestic property Fact. Go on a meter its £1.30 per 1000 lts@ normal Household rate. Put in a sub meter and apply for a none return to sewer and it drops to around £1.08 per 100lts.

 Your water bill is made up of roughly 95% of which go's down your plug hole toilet, bath, shower, dishwasher etc. That is returned to sewer, that is charged at a higher rate roughly £1.30 per cubic meter (1000 lts). None return to sewer that is the water that dose not go down your plug hole, Drinking, cooking, watering the garden etc that is charged at a lower rate as it's not returned to the sewer so they dont have to treat the water to use the water again. So as you take all your water away and dont put it down the drain you can claim the lower rate, providing you have applied for a charge of none return to sewer. So nip down to you local plumbing merchant and get a meter, (£40.00) then fix it to your system or your supply that feed's your van and that is your sub meter.

The figures down here are very different.

Here, input water (i.e. that coming through the meter) is approx £1 per m³

Add to that a sewerage charge of £1.90 per m³

So, in effect, putting a meter on the RO waste (all of which goes to my garden) would cut the cost per m³ from £2.90 to £1.  Well worth it.  As it is, though, despite having a meter we're still on changeover, so being charged old-fashioned rateable water for a while, so no rush to do it.

Brilliant thanks for the advice, I'm going to get onto the water board tomorrow to apply for the none return, might be a good idea anyway as I'm on water meter 'trial' at the moment as my meter was recently installed so their checking the consumption.

It will be like banging your head against a brick wall to start with. Ask for a engineer to visit that normally speeds thinks up.

Not on a meter yet, have seen the leakage van about in the past but not for months.

If I was forced onto a meter I would defo look at rain water harvesting.

Our tap water down here is very chalky around 450ppm,  so DI won't work for me.
