Swindon to Wales (at what cost)???
« on: January 31, 2006, 06:23:04 pm »
Hello all.

This one's a real puzzler for me.

Roughly 360 miles round trip with 2 days overnight stay i reckon.

3 hour drive there and the same back.

240 windows inside and out. Approx 230 of these ground floor.

The question is how much do i charge to make it worth my while without going over the top on pricing.

Lets's get the qoutes rolling in for this one as i need some expert advice.  ;D

360 miles at 26p per mile = £93.60
(at the old army Private Car Rate)

1 x night in a B & B         = £30.00 (to £50)

1 X Food and MIE             = £25.00

Total travel and subsistence = £148.60

Then put your quote on top, which is impossible to say without seeing the job, but around the £300 to £400 mark at least.

40p per mile is the average rate nowadays with most companies expense forms, i only know this as my wife works for local government and that is the normal set rate as recomended by the inland rev'
as tosh said, cant advise on job without seeing it, work out how long it will take you and if its less than aday you will have to charge at least a full day to make it worth your while.
hope this helps

I think the Army's rate is low because they'll always provide you with an alternative form of transport funded at public expense.

I don't really want to pass up on the opportunity to get my foot in the door with this company.

This will be my first commercial contract and i've been assured that if this goes smoothly, then there's lots more to follow. (maybe even local next time)  :D

I was seriously considering contracting the work out myself though if you'd be up for it tosh. Not too keen on leaving my partner for 2 nights running. The thought of all those sheep could get tempting.  :P :P

I've spoken to someone about the contract and he's talked of considering things like travelling cost and time for travel. Wear and tear on the vehicle. Cost of B&B. If i start adding all these things up the price becomes rediculous pretty quick.

I was thinking of charging around £600 all in for the job. How does this sound to you guys

forgot to mention. lots of the 240 windows (whole window frame) are split into 2 or 3 top and side openers. I feel these could take me a while as i'm too bloody meticulous for my own good when it comes to standard of clean.

I generally charge £1 or so per window. 240 in and out makes £480 at least for the job. Then add expenses. Say £30 a night B&B. Plus travel cost. Does £600 sound like a lot or not enough for 2 whole days work plus travel.

What state are the windows in at the moment? Big time difference if they're minging/quite clean.

Is it along the motorways/dual carriageways  or on the A roads - big time difference.

If its somewhere picturesque make a weekend of it and take wifey along too! (Legit business expense too!)
It's a game of three halves!

I don't pay that much since I only have a car, poor me, but I make sure I get a receipt and deduct it from my tax.

The windows are filthy at the moment as it's right on the coast. Loads of sand getting blown across that way. As it's only going to be every 3 months they're gonna be minging each time round i reckon.

Mainly motorway and duel carriage. Took 3 hrs to get there when i went to look at it

Why not sub-contract?  Quote £600 and pay £500! ;)

I've already got you in mind for this one tosh  :)

Just waiting on a ball park figure from the cleaning contracts manager to give me some idea of what to quote them. He seems to think it's going to be worth my while. So i might still be able to make a few quid contracting out. Trouble is whoever goes in needs to get security clearance so i can't sub-sub-contract with my man knowing about it.

I'll keep you posted on this one tosh
