Hi Ryan, when you say canvassing skills are you just going round knockin on doors and asking for the business or are you doing a big leaflet drop and going back? Just wondered what people were shelling out for leaflets - it can get very expensive...

I went out canvassing the other day (Saturday in the sunshine - lovely  8) and got 7 new custys, plus one has rang me back since from the leaflet i posted through, i felt this was pretty good going... what do others do!!!!

Ryan

how do you add your new work calculations up..?

e.g £20 p/ 4 weekly gained does that go down as £20? or... do you calculate over 12 month period? so it would actually be worth £260 of new work,,,

or is it the new work you have gained in that period so if all that new work was ongoing cleaning etc.. then actaully the figure would be around 5k new work per year...which is crackin

I appreciate there will be one offs etc.. in ya figure

Either way good job

Steve h.....

I just doorknock. But a big part is played in the first 5 seconds, you have to judge the character of the person at the door, and adjust your attitude & manner accordingly.

You wouldnt believe how many customers I have gained, by using common phrases such as 'alrite pal, do you need a window cleaner' where other people would slam the door in your face, they require a friendly 'hiya, sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if you currently have a window cleaner'

I think it is all about charachter judgment.... And that has to be done immediatly

Paul h....

The prive is based on the job being done once,

So weather its a £10 weekly, 4weekly or 8weekly job, than it is added as £10

Thanks

Hi Ryan

Thanks for the reply, i totally agree with what you say, my background is 20 years or so in Financial Services previous to this so i understand the sales process pretty well, just wanted to see how other people do things as i believe that you never stop learing. I say sales, as when you are out canvassing you are selling your services and i agree you have to quickly decide how to approach/respond to a client. Its not as difficult as you might think, the main thing is that you have to beleive in yourself and what you can offer the clients, if you beleive in yourself you are halfway there already.
My opening line is nearly always this, with a big smile on my face  :) - "Hi, sorry to pester you, im a local window cleaner looking to increase my business in this area, do you use a window cleaner ?........ you will get a resonse and you just take it from there. If its a point blank NO, dont take offence just say thanks for your time and move on, you are now one step closer to a Yes!

Once you have said this opening line (or similar) ten or 15 times it becomes second nature and you really dont worry about knocking on doors. I usually always have leaflets with me as well, so i can hand them one as they may not commit now but might get back to you in the future or pass it on to a friend  or relative etc.

Just pick an area you fancy covering and give it a go - this way you will also find out if another guy is in the area, as the client will tell you they have someone.

Finally, give yourself targets, it will help you focus for sure if you give yourself a weekly, monthly, quaterly, yearly target etc, No one will kick your arse if you dont hit your target (as we work for ourselves) but if you want to progress you have to give yourself something to aim for and keep a record of how you are getting on, if somethings not working for you, change it

I think this approach works far better than just dropping leaflets, if you have the time, confidence and a basic approach as mentioned you will pick up business for sure.

Cheers

Steve
PS I'm out canvassing again this week so i will update now and again to see this approach is still working for me.

A line that could help many gain more work I often use and it works most time for me. It can be used when the window are dirty.
Go through the intros and then say "I see your window need me but the question ,do you want me." This I find breaks the ice and often gets a smile as its not what they expect you to say.
