UPVC first clean
« on: September 15, 2012, 01:37:24 pm »
Hi Guys,

Just asking, what do most of you guys use when cleaning the UPVC (cill and frame).... some clients will have proper filthy frames if they havent been cleaned for a while. However, if i tried to clean them properly, it would take forever to get round, especially on the first clean.

Just wondered if you guys use just a bit of soap and water (say in a spray bottle) and then wipe round, then maybe use a proper upvc cleaner only on the stubborn bits?

One suggestion was Thompsons UPVC cleaner, but that looks like a liquid that you put on a cloth, i have used similar on my own windows at home, that would take forever. I am using trad method using squeegee off (Ettore) for windows.

Any suggestions guys, ie just wipe round, charge more for first clean, use special stuff, etc etc!!!! :)

Thanks in advance fellas.

Your customers are paying you to clean the windows. What your suggesting is restoring which takes alot longer and in my opinion is a seperate job that takes alot more time than you are paid to do.

Upvc cleaning products do a great job, but unless you are going to do all the windows (frames) then i wouldnt boher as part will look clean and part will look faded.

As your trad i would suggest a wipe over with a clean damp cloth. If i needs more than that you need to charge accordingly

why are you still buying a rebadged product for more than you have to,if you
have any sense at all you will go straight to the source saving you money

i have i missed something here ???

Hi Guys, thanks for all the discussion and replies. I will try one or two of these products on my own house to see which works best in terms of the result and speed of use.
I agree with one of the replies which says, dont bother cleaning the whole window frames as it will take too long, i fully agree with that one. I will just give the frames and cill a good wipe round and if the client wants more than that i will charge extra for my time for sure as it would no doubt take two or three times as long to do all the frames properly. (ie proper opvc cleaner etc.)
Cheers guys  :)

all I ever did was soap up the window and wipe the frame with a damp micro/sill cloth, the squeegie off, detail done

hi Stuart, did you use "squeegee off" or similar product? as i am guessing that you use the same stuff in your bucket to clean the cills etc. ie a damp cloth with a bit of soap (out of your bucket on it)?

no I was very much a fairy liquid man, no need for expensive detergents, use ecover now when trad and I have tried most of the expensive ones and to be honest don't rate them that much

but yes out of the bucket does but once you have squeegied a few windows and wiped the sill you don't need to dip out the bucket, you will have plenty soap on your cloth

Can I ask Stuart why you changed from fairy to ecover when tradding? I've just gone wfp but still using fairy if I have to trad.

no good reason really, read about on here tried it and it works, still think fairy works as well though, if their was no ecover in the supermarket I would have no problems using fairy again. in fact I must check and see what is cheapest as I can't see a great deal of difference

Ah cool, I thought I was missing something, I've been told that fairy leaves more residue than others which has been something I was concerned about after using the stuff for 14 years before going wfp last month, however im not sure how true this is as my windows are coming up really well. Also as I'm still doing the odd window trad due to access or whatever I've since gone back to the same job on my second visit and done it wfp.
