Trailers/Bowsers
« on: September 07, 2012, 04:23:31 pm »
There are a few that have come up for sale local to me, seems like the work isn't there for a few of the guys.

So for the guys that have trailers(in general) or bowsers, is it a pain with the trailer? parking? moving it around? or is it worth the hassle, also Lee, would you recommend a bowser? or anyone else had one?

I need a second machine, and all three bowsers for sale have genuine yanmars, so either way i need to fork out for another machine, just wondering if its worth getting the machine/bowser. Just looking for some pro's and con's.

Cheers,

Matt

You get used to over time pal. The Weston bowser that we had(recently sold to Ian)the only problem we kept having was the jockey dropping through the clamp if we tried to move it with water on. We had to fit a different jockey compared to the usual ribbed one's as we needed one to take off when we hook up because of how low the tow bar was on the Transit. If we kept it on and wound up it would hit the road or speed bumps.

The trailer we have now is twin axle and is well clear of the floor when up. Best thing we did was build this trailer set up.

Cheers mate,

Yeah ive got a big skid mounted machine + tank in my van, just wanted a second for other jobs, and as a spare. Just wanted to see what peoples thoughts were on having to use a trailer/bowser. If it was worth buying it as a machine/bowser set up or just buy a machine on a trolley as a spare.

Yeah ive got the same van as you used to have, so id need to see how it went regarding the jockey wheel.

You can pick up a trailer for about £500 quid and mount a machine yourself. For example a Yanmar at £500-600. Plus your extras etc like a plate for it to sit on and engine mounts.

I have a plant trailer for 2 man jobs, can put an ibc, another machine and a generator in it, all wheel in and out easy enough, I also have full use of the trailer for other things if need be.... thats why I prefer it over  bowser.. i have a transit too and they are all very low at the back, looking into it the only way of raising them up is to higher the suspension as modifying a towbar to rise in anyway seems to be illegal from what i've read,
trailer set ups are better value for money, plus you have the option of using it to carry other stuff such as hotboxes etc. with a bowser you are limited to a cold machine and water

Yeah, i thought about taking my big machine out of the van and trailer mounting it. its got a hot box and everything else built onto the skid. but the way my vans set up its all there. hotbox/machine/tank so ive got it all in the van. was looking at a bowser so i could just tow it to a job and leave it with my guy and go off to another job in the van.any two man jobs, i just hook the trailer up and ive got the two machines ready to go.

Would a standard bowser set up fit in a container? As im gonna need somewhere to store it when not in use.

Width wise it'll fit but you'll have to check the minimum size you can get away with as the price of containers has gone through the roof over the last few years.

Rather than buy one check self storage near to you. A lot use containers and you might find one that suits you for £12 or so a week.
