Vans again
« on: July 22, 2012, 10:51:28 am »

 hi
still changing the now decrepid vivaro, its done alright but its breaking down and looks scruffy.

trying to think out the box, dont know whether to stay this big or slightly bigger as we do pw and gutter cleaning as well, or go smaller and add a trailer?

Big i am thinking mwb/mr transit anyone got one and which engine, small theres the connect but iam also hearing good things about the caddy.

I think if i get a transit and a caddy i will be set up.

the favourite would be a caddy maxi, it takes 753 kg so can do 500liters two men and poles/hoses.

anyone tried this also there are gng and lpg in these models although rare does this save running costs much.

cheers

john

Gut feel is the a payload of 753kgs isn't enough for a 500 litre tank and a 2 man operation. Weight of water, tank, ladders, roofrack, diesel, 2 operators, 2 hose reels, battery and other kit will overload the van by far.

Both our single operator vans have 500 litre tanks and on some days they can each empty them.

Son and I worked for 4 hours each on Friday from my van and we used about 400 litres. We had to stop as we stucked the tank dry. Minimum would be something with a 900kg payload, but even that is questionable.

I have a Citroen Relay SWB payload of 1154kgs, 650 litre 2 man setup and that can be a bit small for the stuff we carry around - 2 hose reels, a variety of poles, backpack and additional 20l filling plastic container.

Personally, I won't consider anything less than a SWB T280 Transit, Relay, Boxer, Ducato type of van. Son in Law has a LWB Hi Roof Transit Connect and I personally would say a Connect T230 would be too small for a 650 litre tank, hose reels etc.

one litre of water is one kilogram in weight. So a 500ltr tank will be 500kg (half a tonne).

 hi
yes i know its pushing it, but working on 500kilos water 80 kg person 75kg fuel leaves 100 kg for bits and a second person if necessary.

it wont be filled full very often, as its the bits and bobs van.

hence having a tranny as well.

Totally agree:

500 kg for water about + 50kg tank and frame 20kg hose reel 75kg fuel 75kg for small built man (i dont know how big small you are)
just these figures without all the other things that we all use like poles pumps, hoses, brushes etc etc etc imo this tell you the payload of a maxi is to low for what your wanting, not only will the handling be affected if you go over there is about 5k fine and imprisonment should you hurt someone else

transit t300 swb can hold all you need, as will a short wheel base reply as said by spruce, vivaro swb are smaller than the two I just mentioned although the payload is ok the space is a loat more limited inside.

Transit connect perfect!

I in swb t220 with 650 tank, 1 operator and equipment needed to do the job, with it all done full of water took it to the weighbridge and it come in 30 kilos under, small van and 650 litres........perfect in my opinion
