Help / Advice Please - Paint Spill on tarmac.
« on: July 17, 2012, 10:20:53 am »

One of our customers lives in a nice block of luxury apartments when she is not in her city home.
She has come to us to see if we can help with the above.
Painters were working on a bin store. Had a spillage and tried to clean up but as you can see there is still a brown stain.
My worry is if we hit it with anything off the shelf here we will have deterioration of the tarmac.
Looking for something either we can use or a recommendation of who best to carry out the works.

Thanks in advance.
Jamie.

Difficult one that.

Probably the clean up did not include pressure washing or you would see marking on the Tarmac.

My opinion is that a spillage on Tarmac is very difficult to put right, even if you can there will be a marked difference in the area compared to the surrounding Tarmac and this may be as unsightly.

If new Tarmac then heating the area and then rolling is the best option but this is not the case here.

Have a chat with Richard Turk at Tensid UK and if the client is so annoyed with it possibly a recommended chemical & some low pressure steam.

I would always let them know there may be surface damage.

Someone else may have the magic formula - if so I would be interested as well!!

Good luck

Rob ;D

If i remember rightly, Mike from here had a similar problem. white paint on tarmac. he used steam from memory but i think his paint was on road tarmac. the tarmac in the picture is super soft. marks easily as rob said. stema or a small ammount of chems would be what id try. Problem is most  chems for breaking down paint will break down the tarmac. we use AS10 for stripping paint. nasty stuff.

Is it in edinburgh jaime?

Looks like they've cleaned it with thinners and ruined the tarmac.

She should go back and put a claim in against the painters. May have to be replaced if it bothers her that much. It does look a mess.

Not sure whether colouring is an option due to the white speckles, what's the overall size? Have you suggested this to her?

I dont know of any magic solution, our problem was different from this,
as Ian suggested - option to colour tarmac as the coating wears the white spots will start to show.

I have had a cursory glance over the internet and can only see specific colours, black, green, red & maybe a couple of others.

It is not clear how long the paving is but would it be a suggestion to colour the entire length?

Coating is easy to apply pressure wash, wait to dry  ;D roller or spray - no traffic 24hrs, lots around based on black top. Need to add disclaimer, as the coating wears (obviously traffic areas) white flecs may reappear. Think I have a few pics on our facebook site will check.

initially looking at that image i can see brown paint and they have used a rag and white spirit/thinners and it has taken the top layer off the tarmac as that stuff is super soft compared to the tarmac on roads.

First apply paint stripper to remove the brown then with a short haired roller, run over the whole section or tarmac with xylene which would blacken the tarmac across it all.
