Honda 13hp 220quid for a service?
« on: June 02, 2012, 06:27:53 pm »
Guys

Would appreciate your input.

Got an immaculate honda 13hp petrol from power-tec. Two years old with about 50 hours use. Took it to a repair/supplier in my area and asked them to give it the once over as I landed a regular clean.

Now I should have known better and confirmed a price but the sun was shining and I was having a good day, so didnt think much about it.

Get a phone call from the receptionist all chirpy and states pw is ready for collection. Thats 180 plus vat. :o
Asked what was done for that price. She said all stripped down and serviced.

So.. my question.. Do you think its a reasonable price for a service on this type of machine. (bear in mind nothing was broken or replaced) I just cant see that fitting a filter/spark plug and an oil change would be that price.

Will be picking up on wednesday and ask for a breakdown, but am I missing trick and just behind the times?

Problem is they are local and I wont be able to deal with them in the future if I kick off and stink up the place. :P

Thanks for your input BlastAway.

I havent picked it up yet.. So I could still challenge them. Felt like I had been ripped Just not sure how badly. :(

Thought about looking the boss in the eye and asking him to justify his price and politely asking if there could be some movement in his price. Dont mind paying the money but I got mouths to feed and wont be mugged off..

Is there anything they could say they worked on to justify their price? anything I can check If they try and blag it.

thanks again

BVC.

They could say they did all kinds to it like new seals, unloader, carb rebuild kit, etc, and if you don't know what to look for then you would be none the wiser, i realised how easy they are to repai / service and now do most of mine myself as you can get the parts cheap enough off ebay as lee has shown.. i went to seddons (main honda dealer round here) and got a quote for a service on a honda diesel once and they only quoted £70 plus Vat and that included genuine honda parts and all oils changed in pump/gearbox, for the same service I also got quoted £120 plus VAT using copy parts elsewhere... from this i have been very weary about having my machines serviced by anyone else but myself, it only takes about an hour and costs about £15 to buy parts and oil.

Sorry but not surprised by cost, assume you dont use them very often and you didnt tell them what you wanted done ???  local guy to us charges over £60 /hr. When I spoke to him years ago he was curious why I started to use him, who was I using previously, etc. As alot of guys start up this type of business and disappear overnight.... maybe this is part of the reason for inflated cost ?

Would you take your van to a unknown garage and ask them for a service without first obtaining the price? ....

As you said, I would speak the the company, if you are going to use them more frequent they will be after keeping you happy. As you use them more often the trust increases

Fair point, However its a sad day when you know its more profitable for your business to rip people off and deal with the occasional customer that wont put up with it, than offer an honest service and build a reputation on trust.

Yep, I'd say that you've paid twice the going rate when using a Company to do this for you.

Best do yourself as not much involved. Alternatively find a local mindependant guy and you'll pay an hour labour plus parts. Recommendation is everything so ask on here for recommendations.
