stages of ro
« on: January 07, 2006, 10:54:02 pm »
i bought a 100gallon 6 stage ro system from ro man set it up as they said run 5 gallons through it first then add the di resin left it to run for hours and i was getting a 3/4 ppm out put so i looked at it and tryed to remember that people have said the di is the last stage

it was set up so the tap water went through the
5 micron sediment, then
activated carbon, then
coconut carbon, then
membrane, then
di resin, and finally
inline carbon this was giving me 2/3ppm out

so i changed it to
5 micron sediment, then
activated carbon, then
coconut carbon, then
membrane, then
di resin, and finally
inline carbon this is now giving me 0ppm

should i have changed this or not can anyone tell me  ???

looks like you have the very same r/o unit as me I dont know if it makes any difference but i dont use the inline carbon at all , im told you really only need that one if your useing it for drinking water as pure doesnt taste to good

just something to think on

with fresh resin in the "small" chamber its 0ppm goes up to 3/4ppm then i change it , I only get 400/450 ltrs per 250ml of resin

ppm after the r/o is about 10 ppm @ 45psi that was b4 i pumped it through now pumping @110 psi and have'nt checked it

may go and check it now to see if theres any difference ...........

Interesting now its pumped after the r/o and b4 the di 4/5ppm and after the di and after 375ltrs its now 2ppm so the resins not having to work so hard to polish up ....

now wondering if resin will last a bit longer

The DI vessel should be the last stage of the process. It's used for final polish after the RO.

You will get more pure out of your resin if your TDS out of the RO is lower Chris.

Bought a 5 stage 200GPD MAKO from AquaFX last may.  It runs full time producing around 450ltrs/day going into a holding tank.
Tap water tds in my area is 350 - 400ppm, comes out of membrane at 1ppm and leaves resin at 0! Has only been turned off 3 times in 7 months, brilliant little system

We have been using w/f pole for about 2 months now and find that we are using a lot of resin(di) although the water is soft  58 ppm.
We are thinking of changing to r/o.

What is the best r/o unit to buy and and who gives the best service?
Also where is the best place to buy resin and how much?
Thanks for all your help. - Michael -G&M

Hi Michael

Our water is 81ppm and we use a merlin r/o.  This brings our water down to 1ppm so should give same results or better!!! for you.

You would probably benefit quite a bit from having an RO. The question is how much water do you use a a day?

From that figure I can point you towards what I think would be the most cost effective RO.

Cheers

You could go for a 100 GPD Ro-Man unit but in my experience you will get approx 300 ltrs out of it a day so not a lot of room for expansion there.

I would go for this one. Its what I use and I get an average of 600 ltrs a day out of it at marginal water pressure.  450 if its really cold though.  My TDS in is around the 420 mark and I always get 5 to 8 ut of it depending on temeratue etc.

http://www.ro-man.com/shop/product_info.php/cPath/22/products_id/100

Lets say you get a 97% reduction at your useage your TDS should go down to 2 PPM. So you should be saving 56 PPM going through the resin.5 days week you use 1250 litres. At 58 that should mean a bag of resin every 8260 ltrs.. Say every 7 weeks. At 2 PPM you should get 250000 lts of pure. Thats a bag every 200 weeks at 250 ltrs a day. I think an RO for is the way to go. OK you will have to get some sort of water storage but I think it makes good sense.

Hope this helps.

Have to say the Merlin really is the biz - 720GPD and around 1 or 2 PPM.

Hi Michael.

It's not quite as easy as that. In principle yes a 200 gpd rated one will produce 200 US gallons per 24 hours. However that is under OPTIMUM working conditions. Input water pressure, temperature etc.  I have a 200 gpd Ro-Man unit. It is on marginal water pressure at around 50 PSI with an input TDS of around 420. I get between 450 and 600 ltrs of pure per day depending on temperature.  It doesn't worry me as I have 2 of these each going into a 1000 ltr IBC and always have plenty of water.

Hope this helps

Andrew
