GAS CONVERSION on HYDRAMASTER 421
« on: March 25, 2012, 04:54:55 pm »
Well converted a 421 to run on reclaimed bio gas but the principle  is the same if you want to run it off propane here some picyys if you fancy doing it yourself

Spud in must be vac and gas tight or it won't work or it will go bang, whiz, boom.

flue lock out solenoid also very important ( hiss, bang)

Re-wiring the backfire control no petrol no need for it

And thats all folks. Starts and runs on Gas vapour, no need for petrol and have removed the petrol tank for safety no need to have another fuel in the back of the van. you could even run it off a red cylinder if you wanted to, dead handy if theres another fuel protest much easier to have a few of them safely stored away rather than gallons of petrol.

When I was considering doing this I called Hydramaster for advice, and they said while they WOULD do it if asked, they would recommend against it due to it being an air cooled engine, and the LPG making it run hotter - have you ever had any problems with this?

How much are these coversions costing?
And how long before you break even when taking the conversion cost against difference in cost of petrol to gas against hours run

did that one on one of my pondering days off and parts were £150, The  machine petrol to the tune  £20- 25 per day that should go down by about £10 a day so break even is a bit over a three weeks.

Paul,
You'll save one hell of a lot more than that, at least half.
Nice job too, you do like a bit of a tinker, don't you? ;)

to be honest i run them off bio gas ( I know a man with a lot of poo gas) I have ran them off bottle and yes you get a few litre left over, helps if you have a refillable bottle as there no waste, or you could use the same tanks as us there are 100 litre tanks come with a cradle and last for the best part of a week, you can even use the same regulator as a bottle meaning you can switch back in a emergency. best bit is they are crash tested to no kill you if you have a smash

Apparently they run very hot which damages the heads ,Dave Parry had to fit an oil feed system to stop the valve seats burning out but it did eventually damage one of the heads
