Payment by BACS has worked very well for us. Only minimal collecting and that's mainly from some older folk who aren't keen on the internet.
Using it has turned some bad payers into people who pay on the same day as the clean. We had one customer who used to pay by cheque and she owed us 5 cleans quite often. Admittedly, it was only £6 per clean but still annoying. Left BACS details and she paid the same afternoon and has paid same day ever since. If they do forget a quick text usually sorts it.

we use standing orders not direct debit.  DDs are more expensive to setup, but are excellent as they give you control to change  prices and let you know if clients stop them.

standing orders are simple and very cheap for you.. work fantastically well.  better than BACs as you can set them up with a reference that you see every time it comes through.  also once setup client has nothing else to do, they pay you  automatically each month.  BACS  relies on clients doing it every time, and what you'll find with BACs is that some clients wont use a reference at all, some will use one you ask them to, and others will use a reference like 'window cleaner' that doesnt help you!

Must admit had no problems with this at all but our note does stipulate that their address is to go on the reference. Maybe we've just got clever customers though who actually read our notes! Standing orders are good if you can get them. We have a few of these also and great if you can get them but BACS is the next best thing in my opinion.

I take all the following:

Cash - 60% (reducing)
Cheque (doorstep and by post) 20%
Direct Bank Transfer/Payment - 10% (increasing)
Paypal - (10% increasing)

I've also started informing new custys that I will take Standing Orders and DD but none have taken me up on it yet.

Offering a variety of options seems to pleasantly surprise most people - I think they still have the mindset of the old scruffy guy collecting only cash for his beer money.

i find the trouble with bacs it relies on people to do it, so i would go down the route of standing orders.
I am just compiling a list of people i am going to approach to convert to standing orders, been at it all day as well as contact details to start reducing problems with access etc

Personally I've only ever gone out collecting once - my usual methods are SAE 40% collect on the day 40% and bank transfer/PayPal 20%

Standing order won't work for those that have a full book and don't work in all weathers, majority of people don't like paying for a clean before it is done.

it's not true to say that most people dont like paying before work is done.  we have very little trouble getting people onto SOs at all.  most are happy for us to take a hassle away from them.

standing orders wont work for people who arent regular tho, so yes if you dont work in all all weathers, you cant ask people to pay you regularly.

Collecting - has this forum taught you nothing?
SAE - ditto above - they want the service so its their responsibilty to find envelope and stamp if this is their preffered method.
Paypal - Why pay paypal whatever they charge when anyone who uses paypal will be able to pay by BACS.
BACS - Free and easy for all to use.
Standing Order - The holy grail.
 ;)

That was my point Richard, there are not many window cleaners who work on a fixed date rota(I know it works for you)therefore they may be late, then some of us take time off for holidays,so for these two reasons the customers windows may not get cleaned, when they have already paid....Might get an Invoice from the customer, return payment within seven days ;D
