Hose Reel Brake
« on: February 01, 2012, 11:12:34 pm »
Anyone know of a way to rig up a brake on a hose reel?

Im sick of having to unreel the hose while slowing the reel with my hand to stop it all coming undone at once.

Any help appreciated...

Cheers,

Matt

You could speak to Rob M-Clean, as he has the hose reels when he bought the H&M system, they had brakes on them he might be able to photo one for you, or do a search for Cox Reels, there might be some photos on their site that would give you some idea. The systems are very basic so you should be able to knock something up.

Yes, with a pin type brake to stop the reel moving.

Cheers, mate,

I had a look on the cox website, mentions adjustable brakes. My reel at the moment has the pin lock, its kinda like a spring loaded gate latch, but i cant use that as a brake because all it does it lock into the hole when its lined up..

Ill wait for rob to come along and maybe try and get a couple of pics of his reel and rig something up.

Ok the one's Rob has is the same as you already have, I see want you are trying to do now, is it really worth the expense of a braking system, what you need is something like the wall mounted hoselock garden hose's have, release's the hose when you pull on it.

The reel is my hi pressure reel, so i doubt i would be able to get a hoselock type set up cheap enough. I just got a text from Rob, looks like i can just rig up some kind of rubber mount to the existing locking pin and use that...

Cheers mate..

Select an annular flat surface on the reel. Drill a hole to take a bolt that will rub this surface. Weld a nut over this hole and then wind the bolt through. Use a pop bottle cap on the end of the bolt to allow some slip between the bolt and reel. Weld a T bar on the bolt head.
Or simply mole grip a bit of old tyre to the frame to rub the reel.
