Would you clean for free at one house in every street, in the hope that it got all the neighbours to pay you to do theirs?!
No. But I might offer one service very cheaply and then do my best to upsell. It's called bait and switch. It's obnoxious, but unfortunately it works for the unscrupulous people who use it.
Or if I was a radio station, I might offer a ridiculously cheap price to one taxi firm and run their adverts heavily. I'd run them so heavily that it made a big difference to that firm and really hurt the other firms. Then a few months later I'd call and offer the other firms the chance to advertise with me. "Well, ABC taxis use my advertising and look what it's done for their business."
Or, if I was a supermarket I might offer baked beans at a loss and sell other stuff at a decent profit.
Or if I was a car salesman like Joe Girard, I might sell one car at a loss and then sell others to that buyer's friends at a good profit.
Or if I was a carpet cleaner I might offer half-price to OAPs on Wednesdays to (i) get my name out there and (ii) to get my van seen parked outside a customer's house.
But the one thing I'd try not to do is embarrass myself by making silly and pointless comparisons.
