Commercial wants hourly rate on invoice
« on: January 05, 2012, 11:46:52 am »
Got a letter from head office of large pizza business this morning.
Can we include hourly rate on all future invoices.

What would you do? ??? dont like to put this information forward to
anyone.

They are refusing to process any invoices without this.

This is a large building takes two men + van + equipment.
Telling how long it takes and hows this is done is not what
i think should be on the invoice :-\

If they won't pay without it you don't have a choice. Ask them why they need it first, then add travel, set up time etc not just how long it takes on the glass.

Well I think its a bloody cheek, Im sure you werent the only one to quote & they chose you for a reason THIS IS NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS. ASK THEM FOR A BREAKDOWN OF THEIR COSTS AND PROFIT MARGINS ON THEIR PRODUCTS AND SEE WHAT THEY TELL YOU!

I would be tempted to call their bluff and say sorry we do not offer an hourly rate and we are confident we provide you with a good service & price. Its just a way to haggle with you when they find out your hourly rate, but as I say chances are you were cheapest anyway so stick to your guns, well i would anyway.

Will they process the invoices that you have already submitted?

I'm not so sure I would want to continue with such a job - though it does sound like it would be a large one to give up on.  I suppose it depends why they want the info really.  If it's just to be able to complete a database form that's one thing.  However, if people are going to be spying on you with stopwatches, that's quite another.
If I were to give out this info to them (and I have reservations as to whether I would), I think that there would need to be supporting paperwork stating that the time taken is variable (varying conditions such as wind etc., number of staff used) but that no more money would be charged if it took longer (implying that they won't get a reduction if it takes less time).
When all is said and done, the hourly rate is none of their business IMO.

Bit of a strange question!

My guess is as soon as you supply it to them they will be on the phone to other w/c companies!

I would tell them what you pay each worker per hour (tell a wee porkie if it's a little high, i.e. if it's you & your partner & not two staff). Then, if they query it, you can then explain ALL the other costs involved! ;)

how long the job takes YOU is irrelevant. bottom line is can they get the same job done cheaper?

probably not otherwise your letter would of been a cancellation i bet.

I think this is what they are trying to find out. Been told to cut costs by head office or something! ;)

smells that way doesnt it. In which case I definately would not hand over the info. Either your the service provider they want for whatever criteria in this case probably cheapest price, or not. Worst case scenario they get another quote, you ask to see the other companys written quotation (incase they try to bluff you) then either beat it or not.

Tell them you cannot quantify an hourly rate because it is all worked out using complex algebraic equations passed down through the generations by ancient pharaohs.  ;)

I've just noticed, the letter IS from "head office"

Wonder if they've been approached by a national & are trying to weigh up which would be cheapest?

Had this years a go just tell them a low hourly rate example £12.50- £18 per hour this is what we did and everything was fine.

Could you provide costing for labour separately i.e

Labour @ £x p/h + Materials, expenses & running costs = £xx

How its done? This should be your method statement. As for hourly wage I'd just make one up like £12 an hour per man an then the rest of the money would put down to sundries
