DON'T YOU HATE IT
« on: December 14, 2005, 06:18:39 pm »

 Don't you hate it :-

When you start coming down the ladder and you see dog muck on your ladders

Your customer has just designed a flower bed in front of the window making it
  awkward to place your ladders

  Pot plants on window sills

The garden gate now has a padlock on it

You get asked " are you a professional window cleaner "

My aren't you expensive, my last window cleaner charged £2.00

Just a few I can think of.

What I really hate more than anything is what happened to me today, and not for the first time either.
I went for payment from a customer that owed me for two cleans.
her, "No I paid you the last time.
me,  " I'm sorry but you didn't, in fact I called back 3 times and you were out".
her, " Well I'm not happy with this, It seems to be happening every other week"
Me, " I havn't been round for a month, I posted slips with the date on for each clean."
her, "Well I'm not happy."
me "ok just pay me for this time. Thank you, you will not see me again."
No loss to me, I had been giving her a sympathy disscount because she is on her own with kids. The job was well under priced. I just feel cheated that's all.
Has this happened to any of you guys? How do you deal with it? Dai

A couple of times but this is how i work:

Clean windows not in give note "i will return for payment following evening" if not in stamped addressed envelope i give them 7 days to pay

if no payment received they dont get done again no reminder no clean.

When they stop and ask to do them i just say i cant fit them in anymore and when they say well your doing the neighbours i say well i do these and them some around the corner so i cant fit you in anymore.

Then watch their windows get really filthy cos no other wc is going to go and do hers on its own.

The problem with leaving the ones that havn't paid is that you will get some that will take advantage of that to have them cleaned less often. You could end up losing a lot of customers. DAI

A rare phenomena; but one that really REALLY bugs me is when some co-cky bloke acts like he's 'Jack the lad' and approaches Wor Lass for a quote; in a smarmy manner.

She knows how to deal with them; but it still really bugs me.  The last one, who I thought was genuine (apparantly he came out his house pulling his fly-zip up and said 'How much for me Chicken?'  A big fat bloke.

I was two houses away and Wor Lass said to him, 'Wait there', and called for me.

I turned up, thought he was genuine and proceded to try and give him a quote.  It was a terraced house and he said he had a conservatory on the rear, but was reluctant to let me see the rear.  Then he said something along the lines of, 'I don't want them done yet, give me your number and I'll phone you'.

Then Wor Lass told me how he'd acted.

I really wanted to thump the time-waster.

Tosh he sounded like a real tool head !
What i hate is the people that phone you a few weeks before Crimbo and say that old chestnut " Can we leave it till the new year and ill ring you , things are a bit tight  right now " , i let it slide last year but this year my reply is , " Well things are gonna get tight for me if every customer like you drop me over Crimbo , save your money and call another w/c in the new year ! "

Is this a common thing for you lot ?

Cheers Rog!

You're very perceptive.  I do really like fat-cocky blokes with stubble.

I'm off to look at your 'Geordie Thread' in the chat section.  I'm sure I'll be flattered!

Regards,

Tosh.

"Oh, surely you're not coming to do the windows?  It's going to rain in a minute!"

My reply:(I wish).. "Noooo, I only came to see if you're ok, I've been concerned because I knew rain was expected, is it going to be ok for you that your windows might get wet sometime during the next month!"

"How much?  The last window cleaner only charged £3.00, how do you justify quoting me £18.00?"

My reply:  "Eemm, when you said he hasn't called for 2 years because he's got multiple fractures and heart problems, was that when he wAS TRYING TO REACH YOUR DORMER WINDOWS WITH HIS TRIPLE LADDER RESTING ON YOUR YORKSTONE PATIO IN JANUARY?"

"I don't know, I can't remember his name.  By the way, do you know anyone who cleans patios with those washer things?"

When I first started, I toyed with the idea of calling my business "Mr Bit".  After consideration, I decided that it sounded silly though   :)

It seems like i'm not the only w/c getting the runaround at xmas. Only started 6 months now but this time of year sucks. When these "i'll call you next time we want it done / or in the spring" customers ring as long as i have enough customers i'm gonna take delight in telling them why they are gonna get dirty windows as no-one will touch them in future.

During the Summer I had a brief period where I had three or four customers say to me, 'Not this month, Mate', or words to that effect.

I dropped 'em, obviously; but now I have my terms and conditions printed on my Chit and it must be getting the message across because I haven't had one in months.
