Not the operators that make the money
« on: January 02, 2012, 06:52:43 pm »
having studied this industry for many years, it is apparent to me that it is not us operators that are making the BIG money within this industry. So why do we do it?

how big is big?

if we all make the big money then the big money is no longer big..... its just the normal size.

but I;m happy being one of the guys earning the small money.......... as my small money is some peoples big money

They always say "don't worry about what others are earning worry about yourself", I know it's not really answering the post but unless you own Manchester City you're just playing at it.

I know quite a few that have done just fine in this industry, I know 3 people of the top of my head who you'd put in millionaires bracket,  yes there those that would be better off working for min wage, but carpet cleaning is the same as any other business, its a matter of getting the work in, and striking a balance with pricing that gives you what you want in the way of reward. Not easy thats why everyones not doing it, those that can do it, often seem to be able to do it in any field as well.

One thing is most people charge to little whats too little that depend on the person, but if they don't think or find they are making enough for them then its too little, and how to charge more is the problem.

So why do we do it?

Flexibility, working for yourself and seeing the difference from something that is an unhealthy and unsightly to something that's looks prestine.
That's what keeps me going.

I tried the 'build an empire' idea but modern day staff attitudes and red tape/regulations made me realise that less money but less stress was the way forward.

I think you need to look at the big picture- somethings value is not only rated in £'s , so flexibility, quality of life , less stress etc needs to come into the equation . To me working on my own , while not making me stacks of money, ticks the boxes for me. It may not for you but thats your decision.

LUXURY!

we get up half hour before we went to bed and lick truck mount tank clean, then clean customer carpets and pay them for the privilege.

Same here.

I would say though the 'stack em high sell em cheap' may work in retail but not in c/c ing, many have tried though.

By that of course I mean doing cheap jobs but lots of them per day.

Monty - an interesting and thought provoking post. Wealth is relevant to motivation - do you want to rich - if so get other people to make money for you , will being rich make you happy ? only you can answer that .For me ,  I wake up in the morning knowing i.m doing a job I love ( now that's what I call rich) some days I get a poop load of money - some days not, the standard of my work is the same - I have been rich - I have been  poor (living on the streets nicking food out of bins type  poor ) and the biggest lesson  learnt was that the best things in life aren't things. It was the kindness of others that got me off the street not their money.

I know some one is going to put a "don,t you want to win the lottery" type question   to my post - my answer of course is yes  , if I did win and had the money in the bank now , would I still go out today and do the £50.00 rug job? also yes
(but then I would have a week off lol)

Monty - hope 2012 is all you wish for and all on the forum the same - Gary

I know a carpet cleaner who uses the money he makes from carpet cleaning for deposits for ex council houses. Which he then rents out... In property alone, he is worth well over a £million....

Me? I'm a lot better off since I stopped throwing money away on bad marketing. But, you live and you learn :)
So at the moment, although I'm not rich in the money sense of the word, I have never been so better off....

I appreciate my freedom and the extra time my business allows me to be with my family...

I have to agree with you Derek. I think of my profession more of a hobby than a job. I think my thread has been misconstrude as if I was complaining. I am not complaining,  neither am I saying I do or do not make money from it, and i am sure we all agree we all love what we do ... if not then we should be doing something else.
