Sticky poles
« on: December 07, 2005, 08:51:13 pm »
I don't know if anyone else has this problem but my pole has started to become a problem extending & retracting even when the clamps are really loose , the sections seem to be stuck fast

So has anyone got any tips for keeping the pole sections sliding nicely

Chris

I use a fibre glass pole, wipe all the sections daily and spray with a furniture polish weekly, from time to time treat the pole to a rubbing of bee's wax.
This time of the year poles pick up fine grit/debris because they are damp/wet a lot of the time

look after your tools and they will look after you

Age isn't a problem for Poles, but i don't think Lithuanians work any longer than us.
Not sure about Portugese.

Try putting a little 3in1 on the inside of the collet

I'm having the same problem with my poles. What i do is at the end of the day i give them a good hose down then wipe them. The polish sounds like a good idea i will have to give it a go.

Hi Chris,

Sorry to hear about your problems.

I will get Kirsty to post out your new jets to your address on file.

As regards the end screw, the way to fix this is to use some two pack araldite. Re-glue it in. (I'm sure that you have worked that one out already!)

As regards the sticky pole, thats why I asked the age, in case it was ours!

First thing to do is to fully extend the pole and flush out the inside with water, this can sometimes be caused by dirt etc, going up the pole on the hose and jamming it up. If that doesn't shift it. Loosen the allen key on the peg retaining nut on the clamp in question, sometimes in the factory they can be slightly over tightened. Don't loosen it too much just a touch.

If that doesn't help then undo the allen key bolt completely and remove thpeg now slide the clamp housing off of the pole end, and clean the inside of the clamp and clean around the base off the removed section and the white guides.

One or all of these should completely sort your sticky pole problem out.

Once again sorry about the end screw if you need a replacement just give us a shout.

Any other problems drop me an email on alex@gardiner.e7even.com

Still can't beat furniture polish every week or better still - silicon spray. It stops the dirt sticking in the first place.

The best place to buy silicon spray is Maplins. They sell it as a 'refurbishment spray'. It makes anything look newish for a while but is very slippery.

It's just a spray stuff in a normal spray can. Just spray on and polish. (Don't what ever you do use w/c'ing cloths) Silicon is also very strongly water resistant.

I think it helps to stop dirt sticking by making the suface less 'stickable'. A bit like Teflon does for non stick saucepans.

Silicon is used to make anything have a lower coeficent of friction but the silicon wears off in the process. It acts as an lubricant.

Sometimes formula one cars are sprayed and polished with it to lower the effect of wind resistance as the air can then slide over the surface easier.

To start with we used furniture spray on our wfp poles but for the last 4 weeks each weekend I've used silicon spray and found it works much much better. It does make the pole a bit harder to hold as when wet as the pole can get slippery but we've had no more problems of extending the pole or retracting it.

As I posted above, the only place I've found who sells silicon spray in a spray can at a reasonable price (£4.99) is Maplins.

Another w/c I know uses Turtle Wax for cars and swears by it.

Thanks Ross

If taking the pole apart and cleaning it doesn't work I'll look at that
