Did a job for a first time customer today who didn't go back to her last cc'er because he left wand marks in the carpet. She didn't tell me that until I had finished and had brushed out the wands marks which I do as a matter of course.
Anyone leave them in?

I think they look bloody terrible. Some cleaners like to leave them in as it makes it obvious the carpet has been cleaned (I think thats the reason!), but personally I always try to brush them out ASAP.

I always ask the customer what they want me to do,leave them or regroom the carpet.The majority have them left in.

i think they look good, and some cleaners do brush them out, maybe because they think they doing a better job

I think they look ridiculous tbh. I have had custies before asking if there will be any 'triangles' after cleaning cos they hate them aswell. Each to their own I suppose but tend to echo Ash's comments.

I hate them and most customers do too. I don't think the carpet looks finished off when their are marks in it. Each their own though.

I brush them out with my adapted pile rake, to add a bit of weight to it and aid in brushing some tough ones out I bolted 2 heads together bit of an exensive brush but life is so much easier when doing velvet crush piles or royal kashan.

Answer to original question............yes.............. I have very, very rarely  felt the need or perceived a benefit from brushing / combing.

The purists will say, but it's in the manual and so and so said we should.

Following vacuuming identical marks are left behind .........do you believe your customers brush them out ?  No don't think so.

I seriously had to go back to a customer a number of years ago, I had cleaned his Lounge while he was out and left the wand marks in as I thought it looked like I'd done a good job, he phoned me up and said he had a real phobia of 'triangles' and couldn't go in the room, he was really serious and quite upset, I had go back to him about 10 at night and brush them out 

Ever since then I've been careful to not leave them, although I think it really makes no difference at all to the clean, it's just peoples perception of what looks good.

I brushed them out on a rental clean and the tenant asked me to "put them back" so when he handed over keys it would be even more obvious they had been cleaned.

He associated the triangles with the carpets being cleaned

One of our first cruise liner bosses hated wand marks and asked this simple but telling question, 'Were they there before you started?' Answer, 'No.' 'So why are they there now?'

On cut pile....

I always put a groomer over wool carpets, because the wand tracks can set really badly when dry.

Nylon, I mostly always groom because the patterns are very distinct due to the pile being very flexible

Polyprop, almost never, the wand tracks don't show up anywhere near so much and the pile springs back almost by itself.  Certainly after a little bit of foot traffic and a quick vacuum it'll be ship shape.

I Don't groom any loop pile except wool if the loops are quite big and wand tracks noticeable

By the way let's not forget the primary purpose of grooming after extraction - to stand/open the pile up which allows the water to evaporate quicker, shortening drying times

As a rule I always rake out (presentation, speeds up drying, pile memory), except with some rentals where you want to prove that the carpet cleaner has been in, afterall no one else could possibly leave such a wonderful patten.

groom caret on every job as i think it finishes the job off and the customer certainly does see the advantage of having their carpet profesionally cleaned as it does leave the carpet looking good.

In a hurry with a cheapo, up and down zig zag. More time people paying more the wand leaves no marks and no grooming required. Shoot me for being so mercenary.
