cleaning black mould in houses
« on: November 11, 2011, 10:37:56 pm »
in our back room we have black mould on some of the walls. i feel we need to keep the window open more to air airflow and possibly get a de humidifier also. What is good for cleaning this prior to decorating? Would sodium hypochlorate clean this up and kill it?

when painting i have been told to use special paint with additives to combat mould growth.

Dettol Mould and Mildew Remover was recommended on here ages ago, by Martin I think.

Since then I've used it many times and not only does it easily get rid of it, in all but one job it has also prevented reoccurrences.

Def PPE up though, and dispose of all rags etc. that are used.

Hypo would clean it but I don't think you’d get the inhibitor aspect offered by the Dettol.

use a water bottle with a spray top dampen down with a 50 / 50 mix of water / bleach stops the mould spores going airbourne and spreading then wipe down using neat bleach on a cloth then use a clean cloth to dry area i then use neat bleach solution again sprayed on and leave to dry naturally
vent the area and throw away all cleaning cloths
need to get rid of thew problem thou
the room sounds like its damp and unventilated--

check out ant carpets cupboards etc may also be effected

once treated / areas clear and no spores returning no need for any specialist paint standard emulsions / glosses fine

leave for a week or so to see if anything re-appears if yes repeat process

but unless the problem of damp / no ventilation is addressed the problem will re-occur

Hi

The dettol Mould and mildew remover is fantastic stuff, no scrubbing and it will melt it off the walls.

When thre area is dry paint with MOULDTECH paint, it's £25.00 for 2/12 ltrs but it is amazing stuff.

I have had it in my bathroom and no mould growth for 18 motns and in the back of our built in wardrobe (it's against an outside wall) and again no mould for 18 months.

It is guranteed for 5 years.

Yep, Tesco do it for £2.90, you might need a few botles, try asda or one of the others, it might be cheaper. Watch your eyes in closed spaces, it's strong stuff and the smell can iritate eyes.
