W.F.P on old lead
« on: November 25, 2005, 10:39:56 am »
The round that i work on mostly is about 95% lead windows, i have herd that w.f.p saves a lot of time but i have also been told that it does not work as well on lead as the water runs down l8r and leaves a mark is this true??
Dont argue with a retard, they will just pull you down to their level and beat you with experience.

they love it, infact, on tuesday i was asked to do the insides of the windows with wfp   ??? ???

it turned out she meant, she opens the windows and i do them from the outside, so for 3 hours she had ALL the windows open  ;D ;D

ha ha i think old lead must send the people a little bit crazy, coz a lot of my customers have a small screw loose, and i get asked some unreal questions.

plus most wc's don't wanna touch leaded windows so most can't get a wc - easy to charge a premium! I do and nobody else minds - lovely!!

Hi Biscute

I am having the day off today because nearly all of this weeks work is on lead and I finished it on Wednesday :)

Most of my stuff is the stick on lead but I do a few that are the old real leaded. If the frames are good then WFP is fantastic for lead. What I found to be the secret with lead is.. as usual.. on the first couple of cleans with WFP is to.. RINSE WELL. If you have been ragging your leaded stuff there will be loads of ingrained muck along the edges of the lead. I am not saying you dont do a good job. Its just that it will be there and the pure water will start to shift it.

I let all my customers know to expect SOME spotting when I started especially on the leads. Yes there was some there at times but not enough to cause me any problems. Now I absolutely fly through the leaded ( and georgian) way faster than I ever could using trad and the results are excellent. Sometimes when I go back around now they dont really look like they need doing.. shhh dont tell the customers :)  YES I do them though  ;D

Of course you could get problems. WFP is like any other tool. Use it badly and you will get bad results. Use it well and it's fabulous for leaded and well painted georgian.

I will give you an example. One place that I do with all old leaded used to take 2 of us 90 mins. I did it the last time in 40 mins on my own.

What?? 95% leaded.. WOW I bet thats hard work mate!!!

Old lead is fine with wfp - but if it is loose beware water running inside small gaps - and turn your jet pressure lower.
It's a game of three halves!

good point - nearly all leaded windows are ancient and should be treated with the care and respect normally afforded to Egyptian mummies or explosives.  I had a couple of nasty ones where the water leaked inside, just don't brush too hard but rinse really well, other than that it should be fine - are you using wfp yet?

I do an old hotel with 80% leaded windows; real leaded mostly.  The windows are that old Roy Harding did the hotel when he was in his twenties.

There's a '1874' scratched on a window in the 'new wing' of the hotel, so I reckon some of the leaded windows are around 200+ years old.

Some leak, some are fixed with selotape and last month I knocked a diamond-shaped pane of glass out from the inside.

It used to take two of us, two hours to do the outside.  It now takes one of us one hour with WFP, and it's £120.00!  My best paid job to date.

We end up skiving round the back of the hotel, saying, 'They're gonna sack us', because it's just too quick, so we end up drinking coffee and chewing the fat with the chefs.
